I've experienced battery degradation of about 3% over about four months of ownership (i.e., maximum charge capacity of 270 miles is now 262) which woud annualize to about 9%/yr. Is this normal?

The reason for the question is that I previously owned three different Teslas over nine years (each for about three years) and on average experience degradation of about 3-4% per year degradation. Any thoughts?

I think if you want to actually know degradation, you will need to follow a more scientific procedure. That maximum miles figure may also change based on your driving habits and previous efficiency.

I highly doubt you experienced that degradation amount, unless you were storing frequently at 95%+ in 100degF+ temperatures.

If you want to measure the amount of usable KwH in your battery, I would recommend following a procedure similar to what I detailed in this thread: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/...est-at-56k-miles-for-le-quad-large-r1s.40949/

You can also use third party apps like ABRP to grab the usable KwH estimate from the cars API, which is discussed in the above thread.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Have you charged to 100% periodically per Rivian recommendations? In the manual:

It's also possible that the computer is actually adapting to your driving style and reflecting the maximum range to you.

Isn't it normal for degradation to be more pronounced during the initial charge cycles and then to level out to a slower rate? Google seems to confirm that's true, but I'm not a battery expert, just follow way too much content on EV's.

Your degradation numbers seem excessive but I agree with other posters that this likely reflects more on your driving patterns than loss of battery capacity.
My R1S has 30,000 miles on it, two years of ownership and I have seen zero reduction total mileage range. It still reports 304 miles in All Purpose at 100% charge.

I've lost 2 miles of range per the trip computer in 3.3 years on the large pack. So yours would be excessive. But I just gained 20-25 miles of range putting on the Goodyear tires, so as long as tire tech stays ahead of my battery, not sweating it. ;)

That number isn’t showing that you have battery degradation. It’s just the guessometer adapting to your driving style.

I agree with others and I would not use the GOM to estimate battery capacity. Sign up for Electrifi. My truck is six months old and I have yet to see any decrease in battery capacity. Per Electrifi, the capacity I received when new has not changed.

Many thanks for the input. I do suspect driving patterns/habits are the primary reason for my battery range issue as I am following Rivian recommended charging practices.

I think your assumptions are wrong. I think it's highly unlikely you have any measurable degradation over four months, and rather than search for the "cause" of the degradation you should be questioning whether you're even looking at the right numbers. What does your RiDE menu say?

It's hard to hear or believe don't worry about it, but don't worry about it, it's not an issue to worry about.

In the past, Tesla would hide degradation with a software locked buffer. So you can drive for the first couple of years without range loss. Not sure if they still do

My guess-o-meter is showing no degradation in almost 2 years and 24k miles. If I extrapolate out to 100% I would still have more than the 352 miles it was rated at as new. My 7 year old Model 3 on the other hand has already lost almost 20%.
