My guess is they will try and fix it by adjusting the actuators and aligning the liftgate.
Have them put it on a decline or test it yourself, before you leave the service center.

Thanks for mentioning this because I wasn't motivated to report it but now I will.

This is definitely a thing. Been happening in our drive since day one.

If I use the fob, load up my hands with bags, get to the back of the R1S and the door isn't open. Finally tested it with the fob while standing at the liftgate and it'll usually open on the 3rd attempt.

camping, and you use your phone to open the liftgate. Lo and behold it partially opens and then closes on you. Now you have to climb out of the side doors
Applying light pressure (from either the inside or outside) will allow the door to open.

Yes. That's why I'm asking ALL owners check to see at what decline angle this happens at, including level.
There might be a software update that commands more "force" to the actuators?
This data needs to be sent to Rivian.
They don't have data except for level.

Is this all just speculation or what?

No.
Straight from the lead technician.
They don't have the tolerance specs in their service manual.
He was the one that suggested this thread.

Are you trying with all modes of activation for opening liftgate?

This is happening for me about 20% of the time now since I started reverse parking into my driveway a few weeks ago. Today, was a little more finicky, popped open about 2-3 inches then stopped, second button push blinked lights, but no movement, then finally worked on 3rd try. It seems to be gradually getting much worse, and tends to happen in the early morning. Before I started parking reverse, it never happened, so I tend to agree the incline matters (or maybe the cold weather). I hope it's something easily adjusted with an OTA update.

Without a request for service they might not think it warrants a OTA fix. If it's even possible?

In the exactly 4 months since we picked up our R1S I've had this happen about a dozen times exactly as Tony R1S posted in our flat garage and when on other flat parking lots (like Costco yesterday). Sometimes we see the "obstacle detected" message, but other times we don't - it just opens about 2 inches and stops. On the 3rd try it seems to give me the "if that's what you really want" finger and opens the whole way. Because I can't open the rear liftgate when my garage door is closed we tend to use the frunk much more frequently. I'll keep track of liftgate issues as well.

Oh that's interesting, I don't know if any message is appearing because I"m standing right behind the tailgate. I'll look for this next time. Could it be confusing me as an obstacle ??? Or maybe it's the proximity to the garage door (about 6 feet)? I'll try parking a little further away next time.

It has been logged as a service item already and was checked out last Monday, but as I had expected, no issues found. They cycled it 20 times and at various incline angles. I'm going to open another ticket for my next visit late Jan.

Haven't tried too much of a slant, but I did have it happen a few times because I touched it. Seems like it unlatches and then starts the actuators, but there is a bit of a delay to that, and you can pull or push it before the actuators start moving it. If you pull it a little and let go it will slam shut before the actuators can move it. I assume it can just immediately slam shut after unlocking if on a strong incline or some wind hits it.

After reading some of these posts, it might be an issue with a certain batch number coming off the assembly line, as some owners don't seem to have this problem. For those that do I would request a service appointment so that they can gather data and find out which production vehicles were affected?
