Random issue occurred today while attempting to charge at a Chargepoint CSS1 charger where my R1T wouldn't unlock the charge port after failing to start a charge. Called Rivian and they had me reset the vehicle (Hold Left outer button and hazard button), which did unlock the port.

Retried the plug and it charged fine.

Figured folks would want to know that a vehicle reset will unlock the charge port, at least in my case.

I kind of wish they had a way to reset specific subsystems, instead of the whole vehicle.

Always reset before calling.😉😀
I didn't know the procedure for resetting the full truck. I've only had to do the infotainment reset previously.

Now that i know what to do for this kind of error. But it would be nice to have a menu in service for resetting specific subsystems, so that i can just reset the charging subsystem in cases like this. The full reset took a solid 5 minutes to finish.

Agreed! It's like they went to the "Jurassic Park School of Computer Programming"; the only way to fix anything is to completely reboot the system.

I have a 2025 R1T and I had a similar issue at a Tesla supercharger using the adapter. Pressing both the manual release button and the adapter release button at the same time released the adapter from the car. I don't see that button on pre 2025 Rivians. Hope that helps 2025+owners as I've never had to hit 2 buttona at the same time with my other EVs.

Selective reset does look like a very nice thing to have. Come to think of it, I never have come across an X86 computer design that allowed for this, and the way computers work, it is all or nothing reset. Ctrl-Alt-Del and last resort, pull the plug. The latter is not an option on EVs.

[Edit]
Come to think of it, I do remember resetting specific components on an x86 machine via software, after doing firmware flashings, but complete reset and/or power cycling ruled.

IMO, if resetting is going to be the first solution for every problem there should be a labeled push button on the dash AND we should be able to do it from the app so we don't have to sit there while it cycles.
Many don't believe it, but I've three service techs tell me the screens don't reset when we do a full reboot using the hazard button. Always do a screen reboot separate when you do a full. On my 3rd R1T with over 100,000 miles combined. Love the trucks, but software stability has been a severe issue on all three (including this Tri Motor). Submitting software ticket tomorrow.

Y'all know there's a manual release to unlock the plug, right? It's right there in the manual ...

Something similar happened to me when I just could not unplug the NACS-to-J1772 charging adapter. It would not be released. Then I found out that I had my vehicle locked at home. Unlocked vehicle, charging adapter released. Great feature when charging at hotels overnight.

The manual method for unlocking the charge port is just a tad on the seriously!? side.

Shrug. Just saying. No need to be stranded at the charger, unable to move, on hold with customer support, out of charge, etc. It's not a crisis since the manual method will always work, even if a reset doesn't.

I had a similar issue at an Ionna charger recently. Turns out I had changed the settings so that proximity lock only unlocked the driver’s door, and that apparently also left the charge port locked. Hitting the unlock icon on the screen released it, and all was good.

Page 425 of a manual that is neither searchable or page addressable from the app is not helpful when you are stuck out on a trip. Yes you can download the pdf, but not something you think of in the moment.

Also, taking your frunk apart at a busy location isn't the first think i would have thought to do.

Called support, they sorted it out.

Since the modules talk to each other, I’m for a complete reset. A module could poison the other modules and just resetting one module could still leave issues in other modules.
The soft rest seems to just reboot the infotainment module.
