R2 High Speed Instability.

I have steering wobble on UHF too, and some bounciness on the freeway (smooth pavement) like I'm riding on square tires. I suspect some combination of balance, alignment, and UHF oversensitivity.

Driving on 20" AT in All Purpose mode. I've got a service appointment first thing on Monday, I'll report back what they find.

I have a steering wheel shake when UHF is enabled, but the R2 drives smooth in the center of the lane. Steering wheel shake stops when UHF is disabled. I believe this has been demonstrated by some folks on YouTube. Ping-Ponging between lines in a lane sounds like UHF is not enabled. That’s just Lane Keep stopping you from crashing and having it be the 2nd R2 sold at auction for parts.

I’m confused.

1) Why would the steering wheel shake independent of road irregularities for so many people?
2) If it’s a bug, this seems like a pretty big and easily verified fault to have let slip to shipping vehicles.

Because it’s not everybody and not automatically repeatable.

I drove R2 with UHF at 70 mph for 200 miles and no instability at all. I do get the steering wheel shake (someone called it Chihuahua mode lol) but it does not impact the car stability at all.

Perhaps cwq93r is correct and you have regular cruise control enabled but not UHF?

It is a known bug that Rivian is aware of to have the steering wheel shimmy. The vehicle is not effected. It is not shimmying on the road.

Just a guess, but I'm thinking it's related to the steering wheel position sensor. Doesn't know precisely where center is and is 'hunting', causing the shake. Could also be related to the nagging about keeping hands on the wheel on every straight section of road when not using UHF. Needs constant input off-center so the sensor recognizes steering inputs being made.

Check your software release. Make sure it is the latest. I read about this steering wheel shake issue somewhere online and it was fixed with a software update I believe. Either that or a hard reset.

I'd definitely get that documented with Rivian. A little steering-wheel shimmy may end up being software/UHF tuning, but actually ping-ponging between the lane lines at 65+ mph is a safety issue IMO.

I'd also test it on the same road with UHF completely off. If it tracks straight normally, that points pretty strongly to UHF. If it still wanders or shimmies with UHF off, I'd want Rivian checking alignment, wheel balance and the steering/suspension hardware. Either way, I wouldn't keep using UHF at highway speeds until they figure it out.
