R2 Roof Sun Shade

The problem is that ceramic film absorbs all that heat. It doesn't reflect it or something. So it will heat up the glass MUCH more than it normally would, and lots of people have cracked or shattered their roof glass this way.

So probably a bad idea. Either use an external PPF, which will need to be replaced frequently, or a fabric shade.

Yup, they advised for the R1's not tinting the roof. We did the windows and it is plenty cool in the cabin. If you toucht the glass it gets hot, but I sometimes wonder if the people complaining about the heat from it have their heads pushed up against it. We are in VA summers here where it often gets in the 100's.

I'm sure an aftermarket shade will be out in just a month or two.

I had a test drive yesterday..It was 88 here, car said 93 (outside and affected by vehicle temp heat absorption, but still most likely an ”in the shade” measurement.

While UV is important, blocking the IR that heats it up is too, and I can tell you that glass roof GETS HOT. We’re going to need some roof liner for sure to block more IR heat from heating up the cabin. I had to put one in my TM3, and it helped A TON to reduce cabin heat and effort needed by the compressor.

Yesterday we already struggled to get the internal temp to comfortable, on LO, on AUTO and with vents blowing straight at us. I hope this was an individual vehicle issue, having tried the AC in the showroom, it got VERY cold as did the seats.

But the in car experience was not as comfortable as I would have expected. As least me personally we’re going to need a roof heat shield. Fortunately, there is a lot of lip there between the roof liner and the glass, so having a third party make a quality stable insert shouldn’t be a problem.

It was 106° when I did mine and I was pleasantly surprised to not feel like a chicken tender under a restaurant heat lamp.

I thought it went very well. I was going in with high expectations and I was not disappointed. The Rivian rep gave me the key card and sent me on my way. I went mid-day so there was quite a bit of traffic Chicago area traffic so, I didn't go on the highway, but I took it on a few different types of roads and the ride was very comfortable (even in firm), yet responsive. The steering felt well weighted, but kind of numb. I left the Regen in low and thought it was good, but my friend drove one earlier in the day and he preferred high regen. Power was more than adequate and I drove 90% of the demo drive in all purpose.

There was more than enough room inside and it was easy to get a good seating position. I guess if I had a complaint it would be lack of lower thigh support, but being tall I'm okay with that. Visibility is good, although I felt the blind spot camera fees was a little small on the driver's display. The vertical was decent, but maybe they can expand the horizontal in a future OTA. The ventilated seats were amazing, and the climate inside was good even in the sun. The roof tint is pretty dark (I believe Rivian stated it blocks 99.5 0r 99.9% on the UV light coming in . I never felt like it was going to be an issue, and I found myself looking up a few times during the drive to see if it was cloudy (it wasn't).

To sum it up, I thought it was amazing and now I'm even more impatient than I was before!!!

Yep, it's the infrared radiation from sun that causes your car to heat up. Get a tint that blocks IR. UV will fade the interior, so get a tint that blocks both UV and IR. I'm in Phx and nothing really prevents the car from becoming an oven except if you leave the AC on while parked. Obviously, shouldn't do that all day.

I even have a roof shade in my MS. It helps a little.

It just takes a bit of time. If there was demand for an R1 version, there will CLEARLY be demand for an R2 version.

The only concern I have is that I THINK the R2 actual roof is longer than the R1S front roof section, so a mid shade bowed cross beam for support might be required.

I would just like to point out the R2 roof does have an aluminum coating that reflects UV and IR. I would not tint the roof knowing that fact. Ceramic absorbs heat, not good with the laminated aluminum roof already.

I ordered some online the first week I got my R1S, but have never used them once.

Living in Phx, I have no need for a glass roof on a vehicle. When I order an R2, I will mount a sun shade inside the lip of the sunroof just like I have on my MS. About 50% of the time, I work at a site that does not have covered parking, so my car sits in the sun all day. The sunroof sunshade makes a significant difference.

Alternatively, I will put a wrap on the sunroof to keep out the sun. This might be the best choice for me. It will be 110°F here in Phx tomorrow, and daytime temps may not drop below 100°F until October. If you live where it's cool, probably not necessary.
