IMO the R3X should have a Quad motor. There is just so much more that can be accomplished with active rather than passive only stability/traction control. I also think this is truly what set Rivian apart from the others when the R!T first arrived.
Oh, if they threw in the variable height/hydraulic suspension I wouldn't complain either. I know this adds to the cost, but the top model should have both of the above.

Tri seems like the better setup for on road performance. The lucid sapphire doesn’t need 4 motors to be one of the best handling cars out there. Watching the quad r1s drag races, there’s already too much wheel spin in the front.

I'm the guy who needs the most power possible in every vehicle I buy.

But for the R3X, a quad motor (if similar to what's in the the R1S today) is going to be overkill. It is a significantly smaller platform and you'll likely hit a point of diminishing returns. Will it hold traction off the line? Probably not with 1000+hp if an ~8000lb R1S can barely do it now.

The real benefit of that much power is:
- Moving a ton of weight, either itself or towing (R3X is much smaller and it certainly isn't designed to pull large trailers)
- Highway drag races (where it takes exponentially more power to go from 140-170mph than it does from 60-90mph) and this is not the purpose of the R3X. It's more of a gravel-road rally machine (think tough Subaru/rally car).

The R3X can delivery a very quick launch with a dual or tri-motor (just imagine putting one from the R1S into a vehicle half the size).

The new Maximus power units are what's going into these new platforms, we have yet to see what their outputs are...but in my humble opinion, quad will be over kill and the Tri will make 99 percent of enthusiast extremely happy.

I could maybe see a quad R2 (or perhaps R2X, anyone?) but for the R3X? That thing might actually takeoff and be the first flying car.

No such thing as enough! Quad-yes! 1,025HP-hell ya! Let's stuff it in there and see if it holds!

Seriously, I agree with prior posts about the R3X being lighter and needs the appropriate power delivery.

Lastly, it's so interesting to see the amount of interest the R3X has garnered vs any other model. I wish it was here sooner.

Instead of going for maximum power output, I'd be more hopeful for good handling dynamics on all surfaces and making sure the torque vectoring is truly dialed in.

Since we know the quad motor set ups have some weaknesses versus a locking or limited slip diff, it would be cool to see an EV with a limited slip set up for the real enthusiast.

Agree I wasn't thinking of maximum power input, just the best handling which is what I thought was possible with a motor at each wheel. Can you provide a link to the weakness you mention please. Seems counter intuitive to me.

was thinking 4 smaller motors versus 3 big ones.

4 motors weighs more than 2 motors, and consumes more energy to cover the same distance.

For R3X to be viable, in terms of sales, will need at least 250 miles range. With 4 motors, it will require more cells to cover the distance than 2 motors. All of this makes the vehicle heavier.

A part of having good handling is have a light weight vehicle. And for smaller “hot hatch”, lighter is better (think of GR Corolla with 3 cylinders or Alpine A110).

So no, i much rather see RWD/AWD single/dual motor setup.

I think tri motor is good enough, 1 front, 2 rear. It does most importantly need a solid cooling setup, and a higher top speed than 130mph. Those two, are the most important.
