Except state legislators decided that gold is what EV owners are and therefore quite all right to scam them in every possible way.

Energy is energy is energy is energy. And the 700% price increase in fast chargers compared to what I pay for the same electricity at home, same source, same everything only means one thing: SCAM.
Apparently, many EV owners either are happy with this scheme, or else they don't care, or else they do not understand, or all of the above.
You are fortunate to live in a place with low cost power. In SoCal my peak rate 4pm to 9pm is 59 cents kWh at my house.

Very easy to justify Solar and home battery systems here. My system ROI is under 4.5 years.

If I have to charge my R1S between 4pm and 9pm it is cheaper to go around the corner and pay Electrify America with the membership pricing.

By my calculations (which might be wrong) that is worse than gas.

Ouch!
Yes it is, all fast chargers are worse than gas with Rivian’s efficiency. For mass EV adoption the price has to come down.

I just charged at the Corte Madera RAN and the cost was 52 cents per kWh, up from 36 cents just last. Has Rivian quietly imposed a >40% price increase?
On the east coast I have only ever paid .36 at a RAN.

The prices have changed in the last week or 2, you can check latest prices per station in you app.

Ah yes, .40. I bet it’s because they were the cheapest around except for a Florida Power and Light station I used. The NY Thru Way is .64. I’ll go back to ICE if the pricing keeps going up.

$17.16 per gallon of gas equivalent but the Rivian gets 82mpg so 20 cents per mile. Our GX470 would be 22 cents per mile.

The RAN price change brings into question Rivian's promise that RAN's are powered by renewable energy. That implies they made a contract in bulk of some sort to purchase green energy. Now the price is different all over which brings the veracity of that into question.

Kind of reaffirms they are trying to stay green. A lot of companies charge a premium to be on a green energy plan.

The best way to figure cost per mile is to take your actual miles drive and how much electricity it cost to charge back to the same SOC.

…maybe because I’ve never seen one though…

And your GX470 would be much slower and much less capable :) Not you in particular, but why do so many people try to compare the cost to operate the R1T/S with public DC fast charging with: vehicles that are much less powerful/much slower and most people charge predominately at home at a much lower cost than public DC fast charging. If cost to operate were the primary concern, no one would be driving Rivians, but Lucid Airs that get 5.0 miles per kWh instead of ~2.2.

As for the price changes, Rivian needs to make money. I would contend it was much easier and faster to launch the network with a flat rate price. Now, Rivian is opening the network. Why charge only $0.36/kWh when all the competitors in the same area have prices of $0.50 or $0.60? They'd be leaving significant money on the table. Also, they've had a year to figure out the variable pricing for every location and implementing it. Conducting all the pricing research for every location, looking at competitors and local energy costs, doesn't happen overnight. But it could have been an overnight decision to launch the network at $0.36/kWh.

Hate to break it to you but the gx470 is more capable off-road has the same top speed and is vastly more reliable on the order of 10x. Probably more considering my Rivian is broken at 9000 miles and the GX has yet to break despite 150k of towing and rock crawling. This coming from personal experience with both. This thread is about RAN cost and DC charging. The cost is comparative to a V8 gas guzzling 3 row SUV. Is what it is. You are right, charging at home is roughly half the cost but I'm also losing 1/3 of a battery per month from vampire drain. You are also correct that we didn't buy them to save on fuel expense and rivian needs to budget carefully going forward if they are to be net positive.

Out west in the boonies, yes. Glad they are there for those that need them but nothing on the 95/64 corridor south of Jersey along the east coast until Florida
