Maybe I am spoiled in a lot of things being from Southern California (orange county, LA county) but does anyone know why there is such a lack of RAN stations in this area?

My understanding is that southern california is major sales area for Rivian and they even have their offices in Irvine. It would be nice to have a few RAN somewhere around her.

Does anyone know if they might add more than their states 600 locations in the future?

Best

There are way more options other than RAN in SoCal compared to other areas. In California, they clearly prioritized getting stations open in and around the mountains, to facilitate "adventure". In Oregon, they prioritized two routes other than I-5, which I assume has existing chargers from other networks. In the East, they're prioritizing Michigan, which is poorly covered by other networks, especially toward the northern part of the state, and the Blue Ridge corridor that is also underserved by other networks.

Looks like they've made a very useful update to the map on Rivian.com/experience/charging so that you can now click on specific locations to see additional information. For open stations -- both RAN and Waypoints -- it has a link to Google Maps for the location. For the RAN Coming Soon it shows the town as plain text.

Unrelated comment: It's interesting that Blowing Rock is still not officially open. At least one or two people were able to get a charge from it. I wonder what's going on with that station.

Oh, looks like Crescent City, CA also opened.
I just stopped here today 26 Feb and none of the stations worked in Blowing Rock. Frustrating!

I think they are trying to put them in places where they are needed. There are so many places to charge in LA/Orange county already it is probably a low priority. They did put one in Barstow which is a key location leaving the LA basin on I15 and I40.
Do you have a preferred station in the Irvine/Costa Mesa area? One that is reliably operating and not super busy? I make a strip from LA to Chino to Costa Mesa back to LA once per week and I wouldn't mind stopping for a quick charge during the trip.

I'd love to have a RAN station but I think you're right, there's just no need. Ostensibly, there's no need anyway...so many of the stations in LA are broken, it's insane.

I’ve actually never used one in Orange County just cheaper to charge at home because of my solar.

There is an EA station in Fountain Valley at Brookhurst and Slater right off the 405 I have gone by many times since it opened a year or so ago and it always seems like it is up. There is also an EA at Westminster Mall right off the 405 that seems to always be up when I have checked that one out. I see people at both of them frequently but never saw them full.

There are 5 EA stations within 5 miles of my house and 17 stations less than 10 miles. There are also 6 EVgo sites within 5 miles of me so Orange County has a lot of coverage.

Of course there are 3 Superchargers within 3 miles here as well with 12, 16, and 24 chargers but they are usually pretty crowded.

Thanks, I’ll start checking them out! Yeah, I’m familiar with most of the Superchargers in the area, but anything other I’ve been struggling with. But it’s only been a week since getting my R1T and I just need to get used to looking for other chargers.

Just mapped it, and it is absolutely possible to drive from the Canadian border to the Mexican border solely on RAN right now - even with the stock 20" wheels/tires. Longest stretch between them is 271 miles.

And it'll only get better as more come online. Can't leave the Pacific states yet without using third-party, though.

Every RAN station I have been to has been empty except for a Bolt I seen pull up to use the L2 that are available in Bishop CA.

I have seen a couple of comments on Plug Share from Tesla owners bitching that the network wasn't open.... lol
Priceless

Swung by the Saginaw, MI location this weekend. No progress in the last several months. They have the transformer and another cabinet set, but no pedestals.

Thanks, saves me from doing it this week. Guessing we might see some movement after the Benton Harbor site and Traverse City sites go online. Planning a TC trip this week so we'll likely stop at the RAN there to check it out.

I drive by the Traverse City site at least once a week - as of Friday there has been no change for a couple of weeks. No Pedestals yet.

It’s great to see Michigan locations getting some love, but you can’t really spell adventure in Michigan without the U.P. Well at least the U….

I'm hoping to take a trip up to Drummond Island this summer, but haven't quite worked up the courage to do it. Closest DC charger on our route is in Mackinaw City, a solid 75 miles from Turtle Ridge. Doesn't look like any real options on the Island unless you're staying at one of the RV parks with an electric site. Charging to 100% before crossing the bridge would probably only give ~35% battery left for offroading.

I've a friend that owns quite a bit of property on Drummond and is up there at least once a month. I'll ask him tomorrow if he knows of any places that charging could be done there.

Follow up: He does not know of any options on Drummond other than other than a campsite that provides power.

Interesting that those pedestals in Benton Harbor are oriented differently than most of the other stations. I'm guessing it was a clearance issue with the fence/property line.

Also, I agree with others who have commented on the "normal" orientation: It seems like the pedestal should be on the left side of the space with the screen facing to the right so you stand in front of your own car while using the screen.
