So I have only had my R1T for a few weeks now and unfortunately today I got into a small "fender" bender in a parking lot.
Here is what happened. I got into the truck, pushed the break in and put the car into reverse. I did not here or notice any warning from the car so I the proceeded to pull out of the parking space not realizing that there was another vehicle stopped right behind me. Yes the accident was my fault as I did not physically turn my head to make sure nothing was behind my. I was distracted by a homeless person who at the same time pulled up right next to me and was asking for money. I just wanted to get out of the situation.
Should the truck have given me any kind of warning that there was something right behind me? There was no audible noise or did I notice anything on the display. Yes the whole thing happened very quickly.
Im just trying to figure out if my R1T should have at least notified my via audible noise and or front dash red lines as I have seen almost every time I pull into a parking space. the car aways gives me both audible and visual cues that I am getting to close to an object.

In my experience the truck takes a little time before the proximity sensors start making warning sounds. If you were rushed and put it in gear and went right away that might have been the issue.

What I should have added to the story was when I first entered the truck and put it into reverse the screen was telling me I did not have the break engaged and it took 2-3 times before the truck did go into reverse.
So if the sensors don’t actually activate before successfully having it in gear than yes once I got it into reverse I pretty much lightly hot the accelerator

Bummer. Agreed with previous response the sensors on my R1S and our other car (an Audi) take a moment to start triggering audible alarms. I would guess the fella standing by your window may trigger that too so you may subconsciously assume that is the source if you didn’t look in the screen or through the window. The single biggest adjustment for me with newer cars is taking in all the stimulus from the screens, warning sounds and radar visuals (behind the wheel in the Rivian) on top of the normal stuff I have always done looking in rear/wing mirrors and through the glass. I used to throw my car into gear and start backing out while looking over my shoulder and now I spend several seconds just taking in all the info and trying to asses if it’s safe to move.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
The warning lights and a red arrow indicating the source of imminent collision will go off if something enters your path from a side, when in reverse.

I have the standard proximity beep turned off because I park in a tight spot, and can’t stand my car yelling at me to be careful when I clearly don‘t have a choice. Therefore - unclear if it would beep at you if something was -already- immediately behind you vs. entering from a side.

I for sure have all the warning beepers turned on though if the car behind me was not moving and again right behind me would the sensors notify me. I almost want to test this theory and have my wife park 2-3 feet behind me and since I won’t be distracted which for sure I was and again this was 100% my fault and see if I do in fact get any warnings. I know for a a fact with my older car a 2020 Landrover Defender if I put the car into reverse and there was something behind me I would get both an audible warning and the car would break automatically just in case a small person was behind me

I think the sensors also don't work above a particular speed and maybe even a certain amount of pedal application. So many missed opportunities to look in a modern vehicle though.....,

Yeah I think you need to take a few stress management or self defense classes or something. Doing what you did is really careless and the lack of a beep is the least of the problems here. I know I harp on people for lecturing others in here but this one is different. You can't do what you did again, you can kill someone doing that.

You need to look behind you, and you even have a couple cameras back there to do so along with a rear view mirror. Next time it could be family that's behind your truck.

I have to ask - the reverse camera would have shown a massive car behind you? You ask about the beep warning/red bars - what about the visual warning, no need to even look behind you. What if there had been a kid behind you; backup cameras are a federal mandate for a very specific reason.

To be honest because I was so distracted by the homeless guy his face was almost right up against my drivers side window I just wanted out so I assume if I had looked at the screen I would have seen the car yet… what about the audible noise or auto braking just in case it wasn’t a kid right behind the truck ??

I was going to ask the same ... you pop it into reverse and a MASSIVE screen shows what's behind you!! Not sure it gets much easier than that in this day and age.

Car is always beeping in my garage, and detects cross traffic a little later than out other cars with backup sensors(CX9). So I don't rely on them. Check the windows, then the camera and start moving. Third car only has the camera, so I try to not rely on anything other than the camera.

Hopefully they add in automatic rear breaking in future models - miss that from my GV70, saved me from backing into a wall a few times.

I don’t think the backup sensors on my R1T work sometimes. When I can clearly see an obsticle, I sometimes don’t hear a beep until I’m very close. If I were to be going at any speed, I wouldn’t have time to react sometimes. I’ve learned to tripple check.

My Audi Q5’s back up sensors are more helpful/ sensitive. Not nearly as fun to drive though!

It took me a while to adjust.
