I learned stick on an 80's VW where the reverse is push down and then forward left, right next to 1st. When the gearbox got pretty well worn in, the "Push Down" part of it was negligible. So, when you're 15, in downtown traffic, your dad is yelling at you to "Go!" at the green light and your older sister is in the back seat laughing at you, it could get pretty confusing... and stressful.

BMW i3 agrees with the OP... you push the top of the lever forward to go forward and pull it back to go back. Of course this is not an UP/DOWN type device as found in the Rivian or Tesla's.

My wife’s Hyundai ioniq 5 twist shifter agrees with OP also but I find rivian more intuitive while she finds Hyundai more intuitive. So it works out. Haha.

Just picked up my R1T on Tuesday. Lovin' it.
However, I can't seem to get my head wrapped around Drive being DOWN and Reverse being UP. That's so un-intuitive to me! I parallel parked it last night for the 1st time and came 1/2" away (not exaggerating) from smashing into the BMW behind me because, as you always are, I was "rushed" trying to get in the spot and not hold up traffic. I instinctively pushed up to go forward and....
Yes, I get why they did it. It's the same order as automatics have been for years. From the top P R N D manuals. But having not had a stalk on the tree for gears in decades, it doesn't translate for me. I also know if they would have done it "my way", some other whiner would come on here and complain about the opposite.
Not really complaining actually. Just remarking that it's another thing I need to adapt to. And there are already so many on this technological marvel....
That is not my problem, mine is I get into my Acura RDX and turn the wipers on to back out of the garage. Then when parking do the same and punch the gas and charging fwd thinking I'm going to back up because my blinkers are on, but instead I go fwd.

You push it down "towards you" to go forward and up "away from you" to go in reverse. The way it is makes sense to me. I think you're going to be in the minority here on this one.
So far a minority of one. I got my first truck at age 72 (Model Y) and this was immediately intuitive, and I've never hit the park button, in fact don't remember using it.
The Rivian stalks, scrolls, and steering wheel buttons make any trip long or short much more comfortable.
Only gripe is 'the other guys'
The '17 Bolt gear selector has a much more complicated learning curve, and the '20 got a bit easier.
The Kona EV has center console buttons, easy but after so much R1 driving, I'm too often initiating a turn signal trying to select the gear.
With feet getting lazy, I like the paddle decelerators on the Kona and Bolt and am searching for it on the Rivian on many a drive.
Wiper and light switches are kinda hidden but they don't get used too much so no worry
While I'm praising I'll mention a small pesky rant and know I'm not the only one who would like a slightly larger display of time, temp, and 'miles to go' on the guess-ometer

I have never been confused with this, but I was prepared prior to getting the R1T from driving Tesla's.

Maybe the OP is like me with the mouse on a computer. For some reason, I have to reverse the behavior of the scroll on the mouse. The default behavior is backward in my mind...but clearly, I am the minority here since I've never met anyone else who reverses the scroll like I do.

Yes, I think that's why whomever started EV shifting went this direction. To mimic an automatic where it goes R-N-D top to bottom.
I don’t know what the earlier EVs like the EV1, RAV4 electric and Nissan Leaf did for shifting, but when Tesla introduced the Model S, Daimler-Benz was a shareholder and they had some technology/parts sharing agreements. The stalks and switches in the Model S were from the Mercedes parts bin, and Tesla supplied the drive trains for the B class EV. Later Rivian and others used the same pattern as Tesla - which of course has now removed the stalks, another reason I switched from Model X to R1S rather than buy a new X.

My mother has a 2021 Mercedes compact SUV that has the same stalk. It’s the easiest ICE for me to drive after a decade driving Teslas and now Rivian.

I agree with the OP. I’ve been driving for 25 years, manual, automatic, floor shifters, stalk shifters etc… and for whatever reason this was immediately un-intuitive to me.

With that said, I got used to it in less than a week.

Now the rolling when taking the food off the break thing gets me confused both ways when I switch back and forth between our ice and rivian vehicles.

I think the Prius has a weird shifter too. Just pretend you are Fred Flintstone or paddling a kayak. I guess that's the motion. The paddle shifters on the BMW are backwards from Audi. These sorts of things are annoying. Scrolling on Mac is opposite from Windows.

Porsche Taycan EV is the same: A lever where Down=drive and Up=Reverse. At least it'll be the same for both cars when our R1S arrives.

Tesla kind of established the standard so I don't think it's going to change.

It's just too dangerous to make it configurable
