Has Rivian ever talked about enabling their cars to share power back to your house in the event of a power outage? It sure would be great to have that feature in the event of a short term outage.

Yes. They have stated the Gen2 R1 is V2H capable, but have yet to release any software/equipment to make it work.

You can use the 110V outlet for some small things.

Yes.

Search is your friend.

This feature is often called "Vehicle to Home" and/or "Vehicle to Grid", often acronymed as V2H and V2G. Related to "Vehicle to Load" or V2L, or the generic V2x.

They've stated that every Rivian ever made is V2H and V2G capable.

And Gen 1 R1, but will require an external invertor.

theoretically a thing. practically? no.

you’re limited to pulling less than 15 amps from the 110v outlet. won’t even power one space heater at full tilt.

meanwhile I can, and have, powered my house with my Cybertruck with a 240v outlet in the truck feeding into a generator inlet. yes, Rivian R1 launched years before Cybertruck, go figure.

The 1500w inverter should run a fridge and your internet modem.
What else do you really need?

V2H right now is going to be a hack not fully supported by Rivian that I know of.

Thank you. I wasn’t sure what to search for even though I tried. It sounds like Rivian knows what we want but they haven’t acted on it. Until they are able to scale; they have to pick their priorities. Nice to have must wait until must have. I hope that R2 is the ticket to scale. I’m looking forward to that. There is no doubt that EVs and their software first infrastructure are light years ahead of the old guard automobile industry. It’s only a matter of time.

Gen 2 R1 will also need an external inverter - zero difference between the two generation in that regard.

Why can't they use the internal 11kW inverter? 240v and 48 Amps is plenty for home backup for most people, I think.

My impression from past Rivian comments is the R1 is capable of using the internal inverter to export power. Maybe I didn't interpret their comments correctly, but if they meant an external inverter is required, it isn't really useful like they way they show the R2 doing it. And the R1 can already export power using an external inverter, if you want to spend $10-20k.

Do you have a source that specifies the R1 will require an external inverter?

Are you talking about the AC to DC converter for charging, which can’t run backwards?
