fyi.... they won't insure older vehicles.

Tried to insure my 92 YJ jeep and the rivian but wouldn't allow an option for the jeep but then they emailed me back saying "we cannot insure you at this time due to driving history and looking into your coverage you do not have the right coverage for leasing this vehicle"

I was shocked and appalled that they hit me with 2 denials and proceeded to check my current coverage..... I felt kind of violated and slapped in the face.

(I have maxed out coverage from Geico btw) in addition, I have 1 ticket from riding my Harley overtaking a semi that was driving slow6 years ago

Like a lot of CA natives, my auto renewal in is getting out of hand. Got quotes from AAA and Geico and it’s way too high compared to my current. Nothing has changed in terms of driver record. I’m trying to find alternatives. My friend told me Tesla has insurance but they can’t insure one of my vehicles for some reason. Rivian has insurance but it’s just an email so not sure how soon they respond. Has anyone had good experience with Rivian insurance? Did they save you a lot?
If you want to lower your insurance rates you need to specifically exclude any family drivers under 25 living under the same roof. Our daughter, who is 24, has her own separate auto policy under her own name for her Toyota Echo. She is specifically excluded from driving or being covered for our Rivian. Our Rivian policy is $102.00 per month (USAA).

I don’t have anyone under 25. Wouldn’t your daughter having her own policy cost more than bundling within a family policy?

Nope. She pays for her own insurance. Insurance rates are based on the worst driving record and the youngest age on the policy. A separate policy just covering her and her Toyota Echo is a much cheaper separate policy than having her on a policy that covers all vehicles with all drivers.

You know what else is interesting if you have multiple vehicles for Tesla insurance? They have something called driver assignments. If you put the more experience driver on the more expensive vehicle, the rate is cheaper. The insurance providers that I’ve worked with before never asked this because everyone listed is covered on all cars so there are no driver assignments

So everyone is seeing 50%-100% increases over the past year? It’s normal in CA?
AAA cited the dramatic increase in uninsured motorists. After the LA fires, automotive and homeowners insurance will go up again.

I think the massive increases are happening with everyone. I shopped around but insurance is just really, really expensive right now. Also, your credit score plays a huge role in your insurance rate, so any changes there will play a part. Make sure your credit score/report at all 3 reporting companies are correct.

The fires aren't helping either. Either car or home insurance, all claims draw out of the same supply of money each insurance company keeps and manages. Every single claim adds to demand. Any insurance company wanting to stay in business—and remain profitable—is going to keep raising rates, drag their feet on payouts, while lowering their liability exposure. It's only going to get worse.

Your habits may not have changed but the average cost of repairs have gone up quite a bit and well…its all trickle down :)

In general, with the severe weather totaling out cars (flooding, fires, hurricanes, tornados) across the US on top of rising accident rates we all are paying for it.

Also, for Progressive, my dad recently got them for their brand new car because they were the cheapest and when he got side-swiped in a hit-n-run last week they are refusing to pay for the car repairs under uninsured motorist.

Honestly I don’t think anyone is getting deals on insurance anymore. USAA tried to almost double my insurance after a year with my Rivian even though nothing changed (no tickets, no claims). I switched to Progressive which split the difference but I’m sure they will raise it soon too. It’s BS.
This concerns me for next year as I just bought a R1S and got a decent monthly rate covering my wife and I.

The way EV insurance is going, its just another thing that's going turn people away. The old adage that EV's save you a load of running costs (gas, maint) is wiped out by the nearly x2 insurance costs vs ICE.

As someone who moved from the UK, my car and home insurance cost me about $1500 a year (fully comp). Now its x5-7 that. I wondered why then I saw 14 yr olds starting to drive and a load of high schoolers driving like total idiots and got my answer.

Raise the legal driving age to 18 and have cops stop and fine everyone who are on their phones. Just watch the number of accidents fall.
I still say a mandatory driver training for all drivers is in order in the US. I knew how to drive from my father but chose to take driver training before I got my license anyway.

I think deductibles and many other options can really impact cost. I just got a new R1S added to our insurance and played around with the options in their online quote tool and was surprised how much some of their stuff inflates the cost (i.e. rental reimbursement, deductible, car replacement bonus 20%, etc).

Insurance is out of control. When your rates go up...sounds like your run of the mill "state increase" for the OP...you need to shop around. Contact some independent agents and bundle home, auto, life to maximize savings.

A lot of changes will be coming to the insurance industry soon I believe.

Insurance rising this much in such a short time concerns me about a spiral. A spiral is when we have more and more folks who go uninsured/underinsured due to the cost being unaffordable to them. Then, when those folks get into an accident the other party insurance has to pickup the cost under their UM coverage.

The more rates go up, the more people are uninsured/underinsured, rates go up more, then more people go uninsured/underinsured. The other problem is state minimums...I think here in Maryland the state minimum is 15/30/60. 15k doesn't go very far anymore to repair body damage and 30k for medical? Please, you walk into the dr. office and your coverage is exhausted 😤

Good to know, thanks! Have a fresh 16yr old driver and what USAA quoted almost gave me a heart attack.

USAA user for 20+ yrs. Clean record and great credit. I was paying ~$1200/yr for my BMW and Alfa. That went to ~$1800 when I got my R1T.

All I did was check on changing my son's drivers license from a permit to a full license and USAA wanted to change my premium to $7000/yr !! (+$2600 increase for 6 months) - no change to my record or credit, no accidents, good student + drivers ed discounts. WTH> that is beyond. The 2nd car in our house a VW Alltrack, only +$140/yr.

Shopped around and Geico+Rivian are quoting closer to my original USAA rate of $1700-1900 yr.

I'll look into him getting his own plan, or just split the cars between insurance companies.

I didn't have much luck with Rivian insurance. They wanted $290/month. State Farm insured me for $190/month but recently informed me it's going up to $220/month. I have great credit and no accidents.

I know that the state minimum in California is going from $15/30,000 to $30/60,000 shortly and that might be SOME of the reason it's increasing. Who knows. We pay more for everything in California. 💩
