Saturday Errands turned into Hit & Run

My wife and I were out yesterday morning and I was getting tailgated by this Camry.. so close I couldn't see most of his car.. the d-bag decided to cut me off and squeeze between cars.. pushing me into the divider... Scraped up the wheels and lost my front tire. The driver sped off before we could catch his plates. They're probably going to get away with it if the cops didn't find the car.

I have to say the R1S took it like a champ and stayed planted. Hoping it's just wheels and some trim and no frame or suspension damage. We were going over 70mph when it happened. Suspension stayed in standard mode so It seemed okay but will know more after the body shop looks at it tomorrow.

Tailgaters are THE worst, most inconsiderate and threatening SOB’s on the road, IMHO. There is rarely a good reason to drive like this. It’s just plain rude and dangerous! Whether by ignorance or design, this is not acceptable behavior. People should have more respect for their fellow drivers. But, I guess that‘s just the nature of the world we live in, today. Many of these types of drivers get behind the wheel and think they can bully their way along and behave in a way they likely never would in a face to face interaction. It’s kind of like how the anonymity of the internet empowers wanna be bullies. It’s sad ? Other tailgaters are just clueless people who lack ANY empathy for the fellow drivers they are threatening. Sorry for the rant. Glad you survived your scary moment.

Dash Cam didn’t catch anything! My wife was shocked it didn’t capture anything but I guess since the airbags didn’t go off it didn’t automatically record?

All cam recordings are automatically stored on the external drive as soon as you start your drive. Did you connect it to a computer to check for the footage there? It wouldn’t just show up under gear guard recordings in the UI.

All Rivian owners should add a hard drive so the cameras catch everything. Best $100 you will ever spend.

Did you take out the usb drive and check on a computer? You won't see it on the Rivian by default unless it detected it as an incident. But should be on the drive if you have dash cam on.

If you initiate a Short Clip, either with the horn or the Save Clip icon on the status bar at the top of the main display, it saves action starting 15 seconds before you actually hit the button or honk? Having said that, the cameras on the Gen 1’s are pretty useless for seeing any detail, at all. Forget license plate numbers.

Glad you guys are ok and I am sorry this happened to you. Geez I hate when people drive like this.

I get everyone is in a hurry today and I do get annoyed from time to time when folks are camped out in the left lane (not saying OP was doing this). There is no excuse to tailgate or follow too closely or make unsafe passing maneuvers. The best solution is to allow more time to reach your destination.

When other drivers act like this sometimes its just best to capitulate and move our of their way. Let someone else teach them a life lesson.

With all that said I highly recommend you setup drive cam. Drive cam will capture a constant stream from the cameras while your driving. Even if the incident cam doesn't pickup what happens you can eject the storage device and usually find what your looking for in the stream files.

Here is the video I created on drive cam setup. Its a MUST HAVE feature. These hit and run drivers raise the cost of insurance for everyone on the road and should be held accountable for their actions.

Best of luck getting it repaired...I am hopeful your just dealing with cosmetic stuff.

It will be on there. It takes many hours for the old recordings to be deleted, depending on drive size. I have just a 256 and it seems like it has about three weeks of recordings on it, at least.
