Hi all,

I've been lurking around for a bit and this is my first post. Thanks all for all the great info that is here all the time :)

It took me a couple years to create the courage to get an R1T and I finally "did" it. I made the reservation and paid the $1000 on May 23rd and a couple days later I got access to the R1T shop. I browsed for a while before deciding between "El Cap" or "Forest Green" but ended up going with the green.

Finally, yesterday I selected an R1T that was in the shop. A few hours late I got a VIN 021XXX.

These are the configurations I went for:

However, today I woke up with "buyers" remorse. I know no one can truly answer this but I am questioning if I am making the right decision.

I have no financial problems and can afford it but looking at recent sold R1Ts and their prices, I am question if this is a responsible choice. I also don't necessarily need to get the Quad-Motor and I happy to wait for a bit to get one.

It feels to me that, financially, I'd be better waiting for a bit. I am also worried this model I've picked is a return. Am I overthinking here?

Thank you!

i had the same feeling at first, its normal to weigh your feelings on such a large purchase. We love our R1S, remember you have a few days before you can cancel the order, and return the vehicle for a full refund, just something to think about.

The R1T is at the top of my budget. Tbh I’ve never purchased a new car before. Just always preferred slightly used. That’s just the way I roll but made an exception for the Rivian. I’ve had it 3 months and not one day I regretted it. Best vehicle I’ve ever owned.
Also love the company, the mission and the people. I’m proud to own and support a company like this so for me it’s about more than just the car.

that being said it’s more performance and capability than I need for most days. If I had had a choice then I probably would have taken the dual motor with standard battery or the quad explore trim which they axed.

If you’re having buyers remorse, I would take a second to reconsider. You definitely don’t want to be feeling that way about a purchase this large.

For me personally, my R1S will be my most expensive vehicle purchase to date. I’ve looked into other options in this price point, both ice and electric, but nothing really fits my requirement for a 7 seater (no kids yet). If I wasn’t picking up an R1S I’d be looking at a slightly used 21-23 Cadillac Escalade.

My R1T cost more than my first house. It is a big purchase. I still worry a little. It is mostly paid off but it has never been a regret. Still the coolest thing I've owned ever done. As a combat paratrooper that is saying something. I'm over a year in and loving it!

My R1T is the most expensive vehicle I’ve bought by about $30k, although I have the early bird pricing. I enjoy it the more I drive it. Is it responsible to buy a vehicle this expensive, no. But not every purchase in life should be “responsible” (if you can financially afford it).

I had similar thoughts and in fact canceled my first order. My guide got me access again and about a week later I chose another one.
While I can afford it, I now have a car payment I never did before.
It is at the top of my budget and more truck than I need ( we camp, ski, etc. but are not serious off roaders), but I am now happy (6 weeks in) with the decision. The truck is great and has so much more utility. The family loves it. I am lucky and grateful that I can afford such a luxury.
GL with your decision. There's no right or wrong call, just what will make you happy.

Same situation here. A smaller, cheaper version would have been perfect for me, but.. YOLO.

You're asking about remorse buying a Rivian truck on a Rivian forum, don't expect unbiased replies.

Personally, if I got buyers remorse, that says a lot.

I am a pretty risk averse person and often feel a bit of “buyers remorse” right after agreeing to a big purchase (usually before completing the purchase - when buying a house, that month between contract and closing is terrible for me :p ). While I originally had that feeling when I selected my R1T out of the shop, it quickly dissipated when I took delivery and drove the vehicle for a bit. There’s nothing else like it - amazing truck. If you can afford it, enjoy it. Tomorrow is promised to no one.

Not too many people will use half the capabilities of the R1T such as I for one, that being said it is an amazing piece of automotive tech! You know the story, fast but civilized with off road abilities Jeeps would be jealous of. The most telling sign of how good this vehicle is, when my wife who is not a car person, especially trucks only wants to take the Rivian when we go out, she loves the ride, comfort and storage. My advice about buying, if you love automobiles and can afford it, GO FOR IT!

Buying expensive vehicles is almost never a “responsible” choice - they depreciate almost as quickly as RVs. You buy one because you want it and you can. Do what’s best for you and your family.
I actually made money on my Airstream when I sold it last year after owning it for a year. Other RV's totally agree.

Its definitely an expensive truck. But I thought about it a couple ways:

1) My 2010 F350 Diesel was $60K back in 2010. At the time that was the most expensive vehicle i'd ever bought. Next to that the Rivian doesnt look that expensive 13 years later.
2) My Tesla Model S's (2 of them) cost very close to $100K each. They're great cars, good tech etc. But they're smaller, less parts, smaller battery, and depending on how you look at things less capable (they cant tow my trailers). Different use case, but for what you get for the money in a Rivian I think the number is actually reasonable as crazy as that sounds.
3) Before this my wife was driving a Mercedes GLC300 SUV, worth about $45K new. The Rivian, even though its a best, is less expensive to drive from an energy perspective. Payback will take a long time, but between maintenance and energy use, it will slowly catch up. Plus we get to ditch the GLC300 and the F350. It can be an everyday driver and a work horse.

When looking at the used market you have to keep in mind the unique situation of the Rivian. You have a bunch of people who ordered early and basically got the truck 15-20k cheaper that you can order one right now for. Those people also waited a long time and potentially bought another vehicle in the mean time. They can turn around and sell the truck they just bought in the last 6 months or so for a profit while still being well under the new MSRP. That's not a normal situation in comparison to other new cars. Over time that effect will wear off IMO.

That said, no car/truck is a great investment. Definitely not one that is brand new and from a start up. I personally took advantage of the situation above, got an extremely low mileage 6 month old R1T for about 15k under what it would cost to buy a new one. The previous owner still made some money plus kept any tax credit.
