Seeking advice for towing a car

Any WDH hitch is going to have brackets to mount on the trailer. Doubt you will be doing that with a U-Haul trailer.

Cheapest option sometimes is not the best option.

I've been towing cars all over the country for years.

Don't waste your money on a UHaul trailer. It won't work with a WDH, I've tried. Just simply not worth the hassle. Uhaul car transporters are hot garbage for trailers, and you couldn't pay me to use one of those things. Surge brakes are awful, and IMO shouldn't be legal.

Find a place like this. https://carolinatrailerrents.com/ that rents car trailers to people just like you that need to move a vehicle once, and then don't need a trailer again. I found a guy that did this in Louisville, and the trailer quality is WELL WELL worth the money to rent the right thing.

Here's my Q7 pulling a rented trailer with a project truck on it:

That trailer had 3,500lb axles with electric brakes on both axles. The tie downs allowed me to properly position the truck on the trailer to get tongue weight balanced properly. I think it cost $500 to rent it for the weekend.

Your Rivian will handle this type of load just fine without a WDH. Electric brakes are significantly safer than surge brakes, and the higher quality trailer will make towing a significantly more pleasant experience than that UHaul POS.

If you can't find a local trailer rental place, then at the very least get the UHaul Multi-Transport trailer.

Those are a SIGNIFICANT upgrade from the POS car haulers. It at least allows you to position the vehicle properly. It does still have the POS surge brakes, though.

Just for funsies, this is how we brought a Typhoon home with a spare frame for another project. Got a lot of interesting looks on that trip.

I haven’t towed with the R1S, but used to tow regularly with my 4Runner.

I have used the Uhaul trailer 4-6 times a year for my track car and sports car. The trailer weighs 2200 pounds for the old style that is still the most common. Combined weight is 3800 pounds with the track car, 5700 pounds with the sports car. Both have not been an issue. I don't recall any wind or swaying issues.

I would suggest adjusting the tongue weight by moving the car forward or backward, then using ratchet straps to secure points, such as the lower control arms instead of the wheel straps on the trailer. My understanding is the Rivian will self level with the trailer hitched.

I think you will be fine using the trailer with a standard hitch.
