When my R1T was delivered on June 28, it had the standard 90 day Illinois tag. I’d read on this forum about issues with registration taking more than 90 days and asked my guide. He acknowledged that there were issues, and asked if I’d like to self-register. I said yes, and he sent in a ticket to get a packet sent. This included the manufacturers certificate of origin, odometer validation, and bill of sale. I took that to my DMV (North Carolina) today with the plate I wanted to transfer from the Silverado I sold. Took 10 minutes today, and I had a registration for 15,000 pounds GVW which is what I had on the Silverado (NC requires GVW to include trailers you might tow). I did have to pay the sales tax again but my guide says I’ll get the refund in about a week. NC only has a 3% vehicle tax, so not so bad.

Hope this helps someone…

This is great to know. I'm in NC as well and took delivery on May 28th and there's been no progress on registration. Reached out to my guide earlier this week and they sent me a self-registration package that will get here tomorrow. Glad to hear it was pretty painless since I'll be doing the same in the next week or two.

I received a ups packet from rivian saying I had to self register in NC (I took delivery June 22nd). It went smoothly but I did need weighted plates as well (with no current plans to tow).

I was also told I will be reimbursed soon.

Yes, you need weighted plates due to the curb weight of the R1T (7,200). The “default” is 9,000 pounds to accommodate passengers and payload.

How did the total fees compare to what you already paid Rivian? Also, how much are you due back in the refund check?

I just posted a pretty detailed process for NC in another thread. Only difference is OP in other thread didn't have an NC drivers license yet, which looks like a prerequisite in the DMV site info.

I wasn't able to transfer my old tag as they didn't designate my '17 Taco as "weighted" but did for the R1T due to its standalone weight even before towing and hauling.

I hope Rivian just defaults to DIY, at least for places like NC where anything else seems problematic. I want to believe that going 80 out of the 90 days of temp tag validity and getting no status was actually latency in a broken process and determining after purchase that NC no longer honored virtual notary. At any rate, DIY enabling and owner execution seems like it could be completed inside of 30 days of delivery with a lot less anxiety for what's happening. Which makes me wonder if attempting T&R concierge is a place Rivian has determined they were spending money only for an often inferior outcome.

I put $2365 on the Amex at the license plate agency. I’m expecting the sales tax refund of $2247 from Rivian, and maybe some of the registration and titling fee of $263. But as long as I get the $2247, I’ll be fine…

Glad to hear it. Ours expired the 3rd week of June and we are now at almost a month with an expired tag. I asked about self registration, was promised it would be sent, then was told they can't send it because the 3rd party group was finalizing everything with the state. I've been told it will all be finished at the first of next week. But I really have zero confidence that it will be. It feels like might has been caught in registration purgatory with no clear way out. If things aren't cleared up by Tuesday I'm going to be going above my guide and reaching out to folks I didn't want to bother.

Mine did not.
They apparently sent me someone elses bill of sale and I didn't realize it until I was there.
Luckily my guide was in the office today and was able to straighten it out but took an extra 45 minutes to get the correct bill of sale.
