A month ago I started getting this message in the bottom left, "Shifting into all wheel drive mode". I wasn't aware that my dual motor R1T would ever shift into or out of one motor or two. Is this a software glitch or does the DM R1T actually disengage one of the motor at times? This has been happening at least since the October update.

In a DM if you use all purpose mode it uses FWD in good conditions and uses AWD when accelerating or if traction is lost.

OP I’ve noticed this as well since the update. Mostly when I’m driving down a steeper downhill road.

Entirely possible the notification is new as well. Rivian's update notes will miss a lot of these minor quality of life fixes.

DM seems to uncouple the rear motor at over 20mph, and under the right conditions and throttle input will stay FWD unless slip is detected or you breach a certain threshold of throttle.

I've had a dual motor Gen 1 R1T for a year now and I don't think I've ever seen that message. I know that it's frequently in 2 WD mode just from the wheels graphic though.
As said above, it starts out in AWD but drops the rear wheels quickly unless it senses loss of traction. You can also drop one level of stability setting for full time AWD
