slower charging due to warm plug

I have this same issue. Took delivery summer of ‘23 and only started having this issue in June ‘24. I have had the warm plug message and slowed charging three times, two of which were overnight in San Diego outside in my driveway at about 70 degrees ambient temperature. It first happened before the June software update and multiple times also since the update. My setup is a Grizzl-e on a 50A circuit and R1S set to charge at 40A.

Same issue here. Warm plug slows charge from about 11kWh to around 7.7kWh after an hour or so. I’m charging on a Tesla wall charger with a2z adapter in garage in PHX so yeah it’s warm in there. This is my first summer with the Rivian so I can’t speak to its past hot weather charging performance. But my experience is this is not an every ev problem. Have a Tesla that charges in same hot garage with the same charge and never has had this issue over previous hot summers. Was told this is normal for Rivian’s, adapter not, but doesn’t mean it’s right. I’ll start to track this and submit to Rivian to see what they say.

I get this with my Tesla wall connectors. They also blink red three times. It's normal if your in a non climate controlled garage and it's really hot.

What I did was set a charging schedule to charge at night after the hottest part of the day. You can also try reducing charging amperage at the start to 40 amps.
This is the way.

I use a Tesla wall charger as well. The thermo sensor in the handle is sensitive. When sitting in the sunshine, above 80 degrees it will go about 20 minutes at 48A before de-rating itself to something like 32A or 24A. The flashing lights indicate the derate due to temperature. At night, or a cooler day, I can charge at 48A all day long. Scheduling the charge at night is the solution.

This has become a recurring issue for me as well. Pretty annoying.

I have never seen "warm plug" until I picked up my R1T from the svc ctr, sitting on their charger. After taking one month to replace a door with a bad factory seal causing loud squeaking, the door was fine but now charging is not. Does this mean everyone with this issue needs a new charging plug receptacle?

I chatted with a rep yesterday and he said it's either due to the heat or perhaps our electric company throttling us. I'm not holding my breath that it's either of those....we'll see if it recurs after the heat dies down this week.

started charging mid-day and it throttled pretty quickly to 6kW. The handle wasn’t particularly hot. Odd that it restricts L2 but wouldn’t restrict DCFC handle at about the same temp. Wonder if my charge port has an issue too… I live so far from the SC I won’t be getting it checked anytime soon though.

It seems that this affects users of both Rivian and 3rd party EVSEs, but only at 48A. If you charge at 40A or below, it does not seem to occur. Are there any exceptions to that?
Negative Ghost rider. I charge at 40a and when I took deliver last September it didn’t do this. It only started after the New Year, but it does do it on lower amperage.

Yes

I was charging my S using a 5kW Clipper Creek that I have charged my Volt for 10 years.

I first had the warm plug message in winter but it happened more often until a month ago it could not even sustain 1kW.

I switched to the Rivian portable charger and that was ok.

I bought a new Emporia hardwired charger and had it installed by an electrician and have been successfully charging at 11kW (48A) since.
