This is like comparing a Granny Smith to a Gala.

The Pismo beach fascist electricity dispenser is $.60 for non members and $.46+ $12.00 a month for members. So as long as you are getting over 300 kWh a month its cheaper.
Came here to say same—I didn’t see in the story that Rivian was charging a monthly “membership Fee” as Tesla does to tap into the cheaper rates. If one needs to hit the SC network frequently during the month, then the $13/mo may make sense. Otherwise, it needs to be factored into the otherwise lowered price/kWhr.

As to the hand-wringing over the price at DCFC—welcome to 2025. Tesla and Rivian are both seeing their networks as revenue generators, given the decision by both companies to open their networks to other brands. OF COURSE they’re raising the $/kWhr price.

Elon wasn’t making a move to defend the planet when he wrote his agreements with Ford, Rivian, GM, et al. He was setting up Tesla to build a revenue stream which was not cyclical as hardware sales are. RJ is doing the same, albeit on a MUCH smaller scale. These are important moves to help stream cash into their respective companies on a monthly basis, irrespective of how car sales are trending at that moment.

Tesla only charges membership for non_Tesla charging. If you are charging a Tesla you get the membership rate (Unless you have Tesla free Supercharging on your vehicle).

Still does not beet Tesla subscription charging.
My experience suggests that RAN usually doesn't even beat Tesla non-member pricing, which is fairly disappointing. I normally just charge my R1S at Tesla superchargers when on the road.

.50kw 2 kw per mile if your lucky on highway .25 per mile.
3.00 gal gas makes my R1S 12 mpg.
What does a comparative 800HP 7 seat vehicle get for mpg at highway speeds? Do you ever get to fill up that vehicle at home? No oil changes? 800hp vehicles sure aren't putting in 87 octane. Granny Smiths to Gala's once again.

I can't think of a single one. Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT Coupe is only 2-row, requires 91 Octane or higher, 650 hp , 2.9s 0-60 mph with very sticky tires and 14/19 mpg at best. Starts from $203,800 and "not designed for towing".

I'm not trying to knock our Rivian at all. Just commenting on the price of electricity. Charging at home makes it a complete 180! And when you average your costs, the Rivian comes out ahead for me.

That’s kind of implicit in the name.

I have no clue about what you said here, but if I understand it correctly, all I can say is man, lay off your maga calculator/computer and these alternative calculations it's giving you.

R1S typically uses 1 kWh to travel 2 miles. It would travel around 200 miles on the energy equivalent of 3 gallons of gasoline, which is about 75% SOC.

Fair enough.
For me, keeping my hard-earned money in my wallet or virtue signalling, a no-brainer. To hell with the latter, anytime, any day.
Lol. Enjoy increased prices on everything else then because you don't want to "virtue signal"

Maybe this is a pilot to determine whether usage would be up significantly by rewarding Rivian owners.
I hope this difference gets rolled out across the country.
I think it was a bad move to charge R1 owners more than the nearby Tesla non-member price.

He used math that actually has a real world application. Your math, while not wrong, is a useless comparison of raw numbers with no correlation to how things actually work.
