Bear in mind that with time comes opportunity. If Rivian is even partially successful, there WILL be aftermarket (non-OEM) options. It just happens. Competition and all of that. And with EV/Battery/tech in general always finding its footing with time, the price of these items will be subject to competition.
And assuming that EV sales actually hit reasonable levels (not sure we'll reach the targeted 50% by 2030) AND solid state becomes viable in the next 5-7 years then it should drive prices down. I've posted elsewhere in this forum about my 2005 Prius battery that was anticipated to cost $10K when I bought the car. 12 years later I experienced a failure and was quoted $3,500 from the dealer for a replacemnt but found an aftermarket option for $1,500. Still working.

Real world data from a Tesla owner.

TLDR: Keep your SoC between 30-50% and there's no escaping calendar aging (battery degradation).

Also... live in colder climates. I saw another study that confirms this.
Thanks, some interesting reading in there. Because we don't really need the range during the week, I'm going to keep the R1T at 60% charge target at least in the summer when our ambient reaches 25C every day, and up to 35C some days. In the winter I'll probably go back to the 70% that Rivian recommends.

I think people are ignoring the used market for battery packs. You can get Tesla Model S or X packs used between 5k and 15k. As more and more EVs come to market eve the used market prices will drop and become a viable option for a pack replacement.

You can get a quote now, but when it's time to change in ~15 years who knows what the price will be. I'm guessing quite a bit lower.
Not an exact comparison- bought 2 niterider bike lights 15 years ago. Was concerned about battery life and replacement cost for the 18650 2000mAh batteries which were pricey back then. Just bought replacements after over 2500 cycles. 2 for $13.99 and now at 9900mAh

It is interesting. I had no data to back it up, but I always felt like the rest of the truck will be more likely to fall apart before the battery degrades or dies.

I do wonder if they surveyed charging behavior. Will be interesting to see how this plays out as more EVs age.
I’ve been researching recurrentauto.com while considering whether or not I’d like to open up our Rivian for them to ping directly (3x a day) to gather data. In exchange they provide battery health data about our Rivian (relative I’m sure), and other projections about it’s EV performance. It’s an interesting service in exchange for gaining access to a growing user base for data analysis.

They claim to only ping the odometer, SoC, range estimate, and charging activity. Their current sample size is 17,452 across 66 different models.

That is really interesting. I had not heard of them before. I would worry that allowing them to collect my data might come back to haunt me later if they had some issue with the way I charge, etc...

Heck, Elon says a lot of dumb shit, so take it in context of the other dumb shit he says. But he did recently make a claim that they could dramatically cut their margins on new car sales and make it up on the service side of the business. There's at least a kernel of truth to this.
Why do you make shit up? Elon never said they could cut their margins on new cars and make it up on service. What he actually said, is that the cars they sell today will be autonomous tomorrow, and the potential revenue from those robo-taxis make it more profitable in the long-term to sell more cars at a lower profit margin than fewer cars at a high profit margin. It had nothing to do with making it up on servicing.

" replacing an EV battery can range from $5,000 to $22,000"

Anyone have any idea what a Rivian full battery replacement might be when the time comes? Something tells me more than that.
Probably will be more than the average, but that's only because the only option today is from Rivian to get a new one. Nobody replaces an ICE with a brand new one from Ford or some other OEM. They use a refurbished engine. Same thing holds true for a used vehicle needing a battery replacement. You will used a refurbished one. They use these all the time to build classic car conversion to EV. They don't order a new battery from Tesla for those.
