I'm not sure why they have 2 positioning devices.
Could be two frequencies for accuracy, 10 cm cited by RJ, as noted earlier.

It could also be 2 separate devices (front/rear), which could provide accuracy as well as vehicle orientation. Some interesting potential applications for the latter, especially off road.

Signal Refresh Rate is also a thing iirc, 10hz provides a way more accurate location vs the 1hz. I am guessing those the reasoning for all those modules is their "ON-STAR" style service needs GPS location for calling/emergencies while the infotainment also needs GPS for off road mapping.

Looking back at the TCM filing, I know I remember that they're using the Gemalto ALAS5-AM for cellular and GNSS (satellite location). I did not remember seeing that it was using a u-blox JODY-W1 for wifi (with Bluetooth disabled, it appears).

Here are the FCC filings for each of those components:

https://fcc.report/FCC-ID/QIPALAS5-AM

https://fcc.report/FCC-ID/XPYJODYW167/4346848

They appear to also use a u-blox NEO-M8L series device for GPS. I'm not sure why they have 2 positioning devices. I'm also not sure what they're using for bluetooth with all of this, since they seem to be disabling it in the JODY-W1 and neither of the other 2 components seem to have it. Maybe they don't have any need for Bluetooth within the TCM and they'll have it in another set of components?

30hz rate is insane

Honestly Rivian Patent documents are soo good and have tons of detail highly recommend reading!
Kanundrum,

No kidding! I used to sleep like a baby, until Rivian came along. Now, I'm five hours into patent documents describing the potential cooling connections for a bed-mounted battery that'll likely never materialize, before realizing that the weird glow in the window is the rising Sun. I'll forward privately what I just found regarding the electrolytic cellular material used on the lug nuts to prevent discoloration. It will keep you awake if you ever need a reason to ward off sleep. ?

Less sexy but equally useful: Traffic data and recommendations per lane (ie, hov lanes vs general purpose).

Some states in the midwest have setup CORS systems for GPS RTK. Any hint of being able to use that for differential correction? 10 cm is basically WASS

I usually follow patent documents for newer technology. But RIVIAN's documents are so intriguing, and one of the main reasons I am willing to take a punt on the car.

5g Cell Signal or 5G Wifi? Big difference, from what you describe its 5G Wifi which according to the diagram it does have.
What is 5G WiFi? 6e is next gen for WiFi. Cellular and WiFi nomenclature are not aligned.

Starting to wonder if this week is a big info dump week. ?

And if they're waiting on the FCC and not DOT/EPA whoever does range approvals.

FCC approval should be a mere formality for the types of things they’ve filed so far. If that’s the delay, then they’ve managed their project timelines poorly.
