Tri motor shouldn't exist... change my mind
My gut feeling is telling me the tri-motor was created as research and development for the tri-motor in R2 / R3.

My gut feeling is telling me the tri-motor was created as research and development for the tri-motor in R2 / R3.
I would lose my mind on my R+D team if they spent much time on this rather than looking at ways to reduce cost / improve quality. I agree this was likely carry over from the R2/R3 development but it adds cost and complexity to the MFG process. Dual and Quad is all that is needed. They made a Tri-motor because that's what tesla has is my opinion. The configurator is just too many options now, i feel like that cuts into their cost cutting goal of this refresh.

It's an interesting combo and will be interesting how it performs.

I assume the front will be an existing Enduro with about 300hp and the rear, a pair of new Accent motors each at about 275hp. So the rear will have significantly more power/torque than front and I assume that will bring some power balance challenges.

I like the idea of the rear bias, however.

I think they realized the quad is not profitable at G1 quad pricing. So they went halfsies between a DM axel and a QM axel with one of each (simpleton's view) and kept the G1 quad price.

I'd choose it all day over a quad. For that reason alone, I think it should exist. And I believe it's going to be the preferred R2 drivetrain, so there's that.
Dual will be the preferred R2 platform the same way most people don't buy the Model Y performance, the Mach-E GT , The Etc... those are a smaller % of total ownership and R2 needs to get mass adoption.

The Quad is going to be really expensive. The Tri Motor matches performance with the current Quad. I say there is no reason for the G2 Quad to exist. But I guess they just wanted to get that performance crown from Tesla.

Mass adoption isn't going to happen on the R1 platform, period. They need R2.

"halfsies " the Tri starts at $106K

another hot take ... the new large being a software locked max pack is a bit of scummy way to make the max pack seem valuable. They lowered the range on the new large to be closer to the old software locked (large) standard+ but still kept the max range the same.

Not any more scummy than software locked Performance on DM

I'm okay with the performance being software locked, I paid for the performance on mine. I'm slightly okay with capacity being software locked, i got the standard+ so I know. The only part that is scummy is how they did it to make the max seem more valuable.
