For the R1T, I'm shooting for one full cycle through the tires using 4+spare with an estimated tire life of 24K so if I rotate every 6K miles each tire gets a 24,000 mile workout by the time I hit 30K miles.

I don't know the real mileage I'll get out of the 22s but in the end, it may not matter. Just trying to get close.

DIY Tire rotation - a couple of factors:
  1. Rotating a spare or not
  2. Expected mileage from 1 tire
This is for non-directional, non-staggered tires.

If you are not rotating in a spare then the rotate interval is less critical because all tires are used during all rotation intervals. If you are rotating a spare, then you want all 5 tires to need changing at the same time so you might want to plan a bit better.

I usually throw out the analysis for low tread wear tires because they tend to be sport car tires that are directional and/or staggered so this doesn't come into play for me.

In thinking about the R1T and my Jeep, I'm just sticking to 4 tire rotation and, even though both have full sized spares, I'll just keep the spare a spare.

I usually end up having 2 tires more worn than the other 2 on all my vehicles, despite regular rotations. Not sure why, but that's been my experience. I just end up buying 2 at a time when they're toast and get what I can out of the other 2.

UPDATE: I got an email to confirm my work order. Rotation: $80

They also texted me this:

"Hi, to expedite your tire rotation service appointment, are you able to bring your vehicle in to the service center instead of a mobile service on 1/23? Please let us know if you are flexible for a drop off as you could wait at the service center for the rotation to be completed. Thank you!"

I told them I work from home and have calls all day, and mobile is my only option for Monday. I would have blocked my schedule if I had known to take it to the service center.

We'll see what happens.

I have done two rotations now myself.

Only real notes would be...these wheel/tires are HEAVY. Use caution.

And...lug nut torque spec is much higher than I am used to in my other vehicles so just be ready for that.
Well done, sir. What hardware do you use for rotations? There are several other threads about bottle jacks and lifts. I'd be interested in the DYI rotation (and winter tire vs. all season swap, with each on its own set of wheels) if there's not a lot of extra hardware I have to buy (and fit in my garage.) Thanks in advance.

I was fortunate to be able to put a 2 post lift in at my house a few years ago, so I am cheating. But...used to always do them myself before the lift on all my cars(dont like shops touching my wheels more than they have to, as the tend to mess them up), so I would jack up a corner, put the temp spare on, drop it, move to next, etc...if no temp spare or full, then leave one corner on a jack stand and jack up other.

I do have the magnetic Jackpucks from jackpucks.com and they work awesome.

I use a torque wrench on the lugs that I got at Harbor Freight.

Very good, thanks for the info. Will have to look into the jackpucks and bottle jack options.

FWIW, I just talked to a Rivian Service rep just now. He called me when I inquired about the tire rotation interval thru the mobile app. He said it depends on what size wheel/tire combo is on the vehicle. Per the rep, 20" AT wheels have a 9k mileage interval and the 21" & 22" wheels have a 7.5k mileage rotation interval. He did ask what drive mode I usually use and said that if you use "conserve" mode, the rotation would be done more often since only the front wheels are engaged. Hope this helps.

interesting. my 21" tyres look great at 7,200 miles. I was planning on waiting until 9k to rotate. My friends local shop charges $18. I guess I should schedule it sooner.

I bought the tire certs from America's Tire (Discount Tire) and will likely be bringing the R1S on 22" wheels in at 5k for rotation. Will see what the wear is like when I hit that number.
