Transition between Regen and Power no longer smooth/quiet

2023 R1S Quad, 20k miles. 2025.22.01.

It's developed a click/clunk/thud noise, when letting off/on the throttle, as the vehicle switches from regen to power delivery.

My understanding is there is maybe a washer fix for this? This is definitely new, when the vehicle was new, it was smooth and silent.

It's a click/clunk at parking lot speeds, but at highway speed, even when trying to make a smooth transition from power/regen or v/v, it can be felt.

When driving and you can hear it, it sounds somewhat similar to the air suspension valve noises, but it's clearly tied to the transition of the drive train, it NOT a suspension noise.

Washer fix helps. You need new half-shafts. Problem is it eventually returns. I've lived with mine and it hasn't gotten any worse luckily.

What Dave said. The crazy thing is how once it starts, even replacing parts is a temp band-aid fix. It comes back and often comes back worse. It's a head scratcher.

I too am interested in what they do. I have the same issues, 23 quad with 21k miles here. The clunk at every stop sign and stop light is getting annoying (and embarrassing since it’s quite loud). I can feel it in the steering wheel every time I stop and go.

I have a '23 R1T Dual with the same clunking noises upfront.. yes, it might be slightly different cause due to the different drivetrain . Its going in later this month to (Hopefully) fix it. I'm sad to hear it comes back. I hope not.

SC initially thought mine needed washers, but ended up replacing a CV axle. Click gone for now.

My clunk happens from a stop when on an incline or a decline. I’ve had hubs and shafts replaced before and it still does this.

just took my 2023 Quad R1S into the service center in Gaithersburg Maryland for this exact problem. I drove around with a Rivian Technician so he could hear the "click/clunk/thud noise".

He said something like, " yea all the early Quads do that." " It's not dangerous and won't leave you stranded. The motor mount bushings get worn as the car drives and there is forward/backward play on the motors... That's what you are hearing"

He said a couple of interesting things that might be relevant. 1st, that Rivian has made improvements in the motor mount bushings... and those could be installed. But 2nd, he warned that even installing new ones and troquing everything down might still mean that the click/clunk/thud noise may return in a year or so.

I left my R1S to have that work done. I will post a follow up on this thread to report if their fix solved the immediate problem.... and if it comes back, I will re-post to let everyone know how long the fix lasted.

IMHO seems like Rivian, if you are listening, your motors shouldn't start rocking back and forth, front to back, after 17K miles. You all have a design problem that needs a fix!
