"Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and Scout Motors announced today the planned implementation of the North American Charging Standard (NACS) for future vehicles in North America, starting in 2025."

https://insideevs.com/news/701566/volkswagen-group-switch-to-nacs/

Is this the beginning of the end for the forced EA experiment?

No but it's certainly time for the forced NACS experiment!

Well at least as far as the NEVI funding is concerned, those still have to include CCS charging. After that who knows what will happen.

I hope not, we need competition.

Imagine if the only place to get gas was Chevron.
Agree. I only said the end of EA experiment because VW deal with the Justice Department as a part of Dieselgate settlement. If you recall, Standard Oil was broken up for monopoly.

Need real competition, not just another charging stalls.

For now. Can always be amended and changed, if CCS becomes obsolete going forward.

Sort of like DVI vs HDMI interface. DVI devices still exists and there are HDMI adapters (i.e., CCS1 adapter for NACS), so there will be means to keep CCS1 alive.

I would add that as a someone thinking about 718 Cayman EV, knowing that either it will come with NACS or access to NACS makes buying decision bit easier, once Porsche release the model in 2025.

Honestly, I am fine with ONE standard emerging so that all the EVSE providers can simply focus on that, retrofit and do whatever they need to do to ensure that the infrastructure is ready. Sucks that I have to carry around an adapter. But if that increases my access to charging, let's go!

Iโ€™m not so concerned about an Adapter, Iโ€™ve only used DCFC chargers with my RiIvan around 60 times in the 11 months Iโ€™ve had it and 38 of those times were in the first 3 weeks.

Thatโ€™s the wrong comparison.

Going to NACS is just eliminating a format/protocol. EA and all the other charging networks can still exist by just changing the type of charger.

Everything about the NACS design is already open-sourced for anyone to utilize.

This is just like getting rid of HD-DVD or the Lightning Port and moving all to Blu-Ray and USB-C.

Charging Networks don't need to change the type of charger, just the connector.

There are more networks than Supercharger and EA.

EVgo and their partnership with GM.

ChargePoint. Greenlots. Flo.

Mercedes is getting into the game.

There is the yet unnamed network started by 7 major OEMs.

There are new companies like Rove bringing Supercharger type 40 stall stations coming.

EA is a subsidiary of VW. If VW is switching, I don't see why EA wouldn't. And EA has already announced on 6/29/2023 they will switch by 2025. I don't know if dieselgate settlement terms in detail... If settlement allows sale of EA, I can see VW doing that (choosing to focus on building cars instead).

Stellantis wants to see all the pioneering companies take the arrows.

Then deliver a BEV to North America in 2025 or 26.

Genius? More likely boneheadly stupid.
