I thought it might be useful to start a thread to post information and comments as new Waypoint Chargers are installed. I'll kick it off by replying to this post with some comments about the Fort Mason charger in San Francisco.

The first Waypoint Charger I've seen is in Fort Mason in San Francisco. It provides level 2 charging for four cars. Parking is free, as is charging. Charging is requested to be limited to 4 hours. Your chance of finding one of these chargers available is very low. It is the only free charger in all of San Francisco where you don't have to pay for parking. (As far as I know.)

What is nearby: This is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It is a nice area for a walk or run. You can find views of SF bay. The Fort Mason Community Garden is open to the public and has picnic tables.

This location doesn't fit my idea of an ideal spot for a Waypoint Charger. There are lots of other charging alternatives nearby. I hope future Waypoint Charger locations are chosen to make places accessible to EVs where it is difficult to charge. On the other hand, it is great visibility for Rivian in a city where they'll probably sell a lot of vehicles.

Forgive me as I have not followed the Rivian/Waypoint charging network news.

Is the plan for these chargers to always be free?

I think it has been mentioned, although I can't find it quickly, that the boxes are designed to allow for payment, if the host chooses to bill for charging sessions. I assume the ones that Rivian is installing at parks, museums, etc. will always be free, but ones that are installed at hotels, restaurants, etc. might charge.

J1772 has no provision for the EVSE to know the make/model of EV connected.

Be happy they are operational. If they were in a recreational area near an east coast metro chances are they’d already be trashed…

CS says RAN DCFC are for Rivian ONLY, and free to use for a year after take delivery. Only trouble is, the number of DCFC's on the RAN is the same today as it was 6 months ago...ZERO. A lot of good it's going to do current owners. Maybe they will extend offer to a year AFTER the network is built out for early owners...hoping anyway.

I will say that with the Rivian Wall Charger, when looking at the charge history, it currently indicates 'Unknown Vehicle' indicating that it will have the ability to determine the vehicle that is/was charging.

Its a rebranded wallbox unit so that makes sense

Huh... I wonder why they even put a charger facing the handicap spot like that. I guess theoretically a person with a handicap tag could use it, but it seems like it's just inviting bad behavior like we see there.
