Huh... I wonder why they even put a charger facing the handicap spot like that. I guess theoretically a person with a handicap tag could use it, but it seems like it's just inviting bad behavior like we see there.
Isn’t that like saying handicap spots near business entrances invite bad behavior?

people need to be less shitty…. And ticket the crap out of them if they won’t.

I completely agree that people need to be less shitty. I'm all for tickets and towing for anybody blocking a handicap spot or even just ICE'ing an EV charger. I was thinking about the situation in the photo this way: There are only so many chargers. Why put one facing a parking spot that will be in use far less than other spots?

I've never heard of someone parking in a handicap spot because the rest of the lot was full. I've only heard of it happening because they're lazy assholes. In this case, they're being an asshole, of course, but I assume they're doing it because that's the only charger left open. EDIT to be super clear: I am not AT ALL condoning what this person did. It's 100% wrong. I'm saying the charger should have been put on a different parking spot so this wasn't even an option for a jerk.

There's a guy in the MINI SE groups who keeps posting videos around the UK trying to show how inaccessible public EV charging infrastructure is. Handicap folks will definitely be using EVs and public chargers, so I see no issue here. The issue is a non-handicap tagged vehicle using it...existing laws cover that problem.

Fair point, and I admit I'm probably exhibiting some ableism here. I don't mean to distract from the basic fact that the Kia driver is a total a'hole who should be ticketed and/or towed for this inexcusable parking job.

Devil's advocate: Perhaps they had a handicap placard on their dash? Not all eligible drivers have permanent plates.

That is possible, but I'm a cynical person. :p

On looking at the photo again, I see another possible problem... I don't think the BMW is plugged in at all, and there's a person sitting in it. They should move the car if they're not actively charging. There's not an EVSE on the post with the sign, and it looks to me like one of the EVSE's on the other side of the BMW has its cable hanging unused.

Yeah, the i3 is not plugged in... it's charge port is on the pass side rear fender.
Could be it's owner took the photo after charging completed and is the reason he/she is not in the car? Or, if you look at the other photo.. there are two people walking towards the cars.. maybe they are returning to the Bimmer?

I like to give i3 owners the benefit of doubt ;)

The BMW i3 is my car. I pulled into the empty spot thinking I would be able to charge. Turns out all 4 chargers were taken, one by the illegally parked Kia. I left as soon as I finished taking the pictures. I was actually also bothered by the X5 plug-in hybrid taking up a charger that could be used by an EV.

Actually, at least in So Cal, they are mandating HC accessible EV chargers, however, they can be used by non-HC vehicles for charging only and must be moved when charging is completed. I've seen this at multiple shopping centers as well at my workplace!

I go back and forth on PHEVs using public chargers. But as a fellow short-range EV driver, I kinda wish they wouldn't use them.

Probably
I think it has been mentioned, although I can't find it quickly, that the boxes are designed to allow for payment, if the host chooses to bill for charging sessions. I assume the ones that Rivian is installing at parks, museums, etc. will always be free, but ones that are installed at hotels, restaurants, etc. might charge.
Probably not always

Is your i3 the REX or 100% EV? I went out of my way to purchase the REX and am happy to have the "just in case" extra range.

My i3 is a pure EV, but with the longest range battery. (160miles) I like the reliability aspect of a pure EV.
To bring this back to Rivian country, my R1T is supposed to show up in Q4. I thought maybe Rivian could build some sand dunes or a rock pile around the charger. Then only 4WD EVs could access it!

The first Waypoint Charger I've seen is in Fort Mason in San Francisco. It provides level 2 charging for four cars. Parking is free, as is charging. Charging is requested to be limited to 4 hours. Your chance of finding one of these chargers available is very low. It is the only free charger in all of San Francisco where you don't have to pay for parking. (As far as I know.)

What is nearby: This is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It is a nice area for a walk or run. You can find views of SF bay. The Fort Mason Community Garden is open to the public and has picnic tables.

This location doesn't fit my idea of an ideal spot for a Waypoint Charger. There are lots of other charging alternatives nearby. I hope future Waypoint Charger locations are chosen to make places accessible to EVs where it is difficult to charge. On the other hand, it is great visibility for Rivian in a city where they'll probably sell a lot of vehicles.

Would love to see some at El Porto parking lot. Pick up a charge while surfing? Yes please!

Thanks for clarifying, and my apology for suggesting your car might also be in the wrong.
