I hope to take delivery of my quad R1S in Feb/April and came across a video on the compact spare. First of all - that compact spare of really neat with how it expands and contracts! In terms of the tire change, what exactly does 'Tire Change Mode' do? My understanding is that you need to raise the suspension to max height first and then go to Tire Change Mode, if that is the case what else does that mode do? Why doesn't that mode auto raise the height and save a step?

Thanks
Danny

It just disables the suspension so it does not try to adjust anything while you are jacking the vehicle up.

Highest suspension isn't strictly necessary if you are using a floor jack, but absolutely should be used for a tire change roadside with the scissor jack. The vehicle can shift sideways too much for the scissor jack to compensate for and you risk the jack collapsing or coming loose.

Rivian doesn't explain why, but this is, in my opinion, the reasoning for it.

This.

And has @Dark-Fx mentioned, you don't technically need to be in off-road highest to use tire-change mode, but I definitely recommend it when changing tires using a floor jack or a lift.

Matter of fact, my recent Rivian mobile service tech informed me that if we're doing alignments at 3rd party shops that cannot enter alignment diagnostic mode, tire-change mode is a must.

So on a flat driveway, using my 3-1/2 ton rolling jack, and a puck, I can lift the vehicle at any height? As long as tire change mode is enabled. I was wondering why it wants you to take the vehicle to max height.

Even on my level driveway using a 3-ton floor jack with the R1T in max height off-road and tire-change mode, the truck still shifted sideways quite a bit (a whole lot) before the tire is off the ground.

Maybe they just say highest because if it's in low mode, the wheel is harder to get out of the wheel well? To remove any ambiguity they just say highest. It's also less droop when you are lifting all that weight. Cranking up an empty jack is less work than when the car is on it and a long travel suspension means lots of turns to get that wheel in the air. Having the truck do most of it might be easier.

I agree, scissor jacks are a safety nightmare from a stability point of view; especially off road. A bottle jack is more stable but then there's that leaky oil thing in the back of your car. Toyota makes a mechanical bottle jack that it supplies.

You also end up with a greater load on the jack because the suspension isn't providing as much support. Forgot about that on my earlier post.

That's true too and the rivian is heavy! A scissor jack is also easier to turn as it gets closer to full extension.

America Tire said Off-Road for highest suspension isn’t necessary because they can get their jacks safely underneath. They do Tire Change mode. I thought maybe they were just being lazy by skipping a step.

I have had mine up on a lift about 10 times now and never used tire change mode. Everything still works....

not sure what tire mode does but i thought id read somewhere that putting it in highest setting is so that you have enough clearance to remove the wheel? if you leave it in standard or lower, the wheel will sag too low to remove?

If you have a hoist or doesn't matter. If you have a bottle jack, the droop may be bigger than your stroke and a long way to lift the weight of the vehicle.
