The question re: charge level Li vs VRLA (lead) batteries also crossed my mind. I'd like to hear from someone who knows the answer for the Gen 1 .

Has anyone replaced the 12V with the lithium Ohmmu batteries? If so, how have they held up? Any problems? I am waiting for Rivian mobile service on Mar 28. Problem is I have 36094 miles My 3 years ends in Aug. No idea if they will replace under warranty or not. I'm considering just replacing with the lithium but the only one I'm aware of is the one YouTuber who shows how to replace. In the mean time I've got the truck plugged in to 120v portable charger to maintain the batteries.
I watched the YT video of the vendor changing the dual 12V batteries in a Gen1 R1T...it looked very straight forward but there appeared to be several comments from people that they couldn't clear the error codes after installing the Ohmmu batteries.

I had not seen those comments. That is definate a problem if error codes cannot be cleared.

I'm in South Texas and mine barely made it under the warranty before replacing by 1.5 months. I'd get em swapped.
U get warning?

I haven’t done it yet - but there is a command in the RiDE menu to clear the 12v error codes.

I'd monitor the charge/discharge cycles in Electrafi.com and if your truck doesn't sleep for longer than 2hrs in a row without GearGuard or a key nearby, then it might be time for replacement.
So, if ElectraFi indicates idle in lieu of sleeping, does that mean the HV is charging the 12V batteries? How many hours per day should the R1 be sleeping vs. idle? Thanks

Correct. Idle might mean a lot of things (charging being one of those), but basically NOT sleeping.

What normal cycles look like depends on which configuration you have. My dual 12V Batteries Gen1 Quad motor can sleep for 10+ hours when the 12V batteries are in top shape (check screenshots on my thread here).

I've heard that Gen1 with single batteries would last half as long, at least (which makes sense). Unfortunately, I don't have data from when my 12V batteries died.

My guess (Stressing GUESS) is that if your truck can't sleep for 2 or 3 hours, then your 12v might be near their end-of-life

What are the thoughts of the Forum about if/when to proactively replace the 12V batteries before you get a warning message or failure? My R1T is now 30 months old with about 33K miles... do you schedule an appointment to replace them at the expiration of the 3YR/36K mile warranty? ...or do you keep driving until you get a warning message?

I certainly want to avoid getting stranded - and a tow to the Service Center. I may order service for a proactive replacement at the warranty expiration. Thoughts?
I took mine in for the dash rattle 2 weeks ago and they did a proactive 12v replacement. I've got a 2023 R1T so not sure what their protocol is but I didn't request it, had no indicator warnings, and no issues. They informed me that would be part of the service when I dropped it off.

similar here. I have an early truck that got the only warning us old timers would see. Bricked truck. That was about 2 months ago after taking delivery.
34 months later it just popped up saying it needed to be replaced.
While that isn’t lots of data points, as someone else mentioned, these may not last 3 years or only about it

Has anyone been able to get their 12v battery replaced by a mobile technician? I'm a 5 hour round trip away from the closest service center .

There are plenty of forum users who had a mobile Technician replacing their 12v. I think Rivian is still doing it unless the vehicle is bricked in which case they make you tow it to the SC (as I had to do)

UPDATE (04/03/2025): I just received the "Replace 12V Battery" warning light with about 1500 miles left on my battery warranty. Mobile Tech appointment scheduled for 3 weeks out... was told as long as I don't let SOC dip below 20% then I should be fine. Fingers crossed for next 3 weeks but glad to get the batteries replaced under warranty.

That claim of the SoC >20% might be BS :)

My truck died with 69% SoC, so I would keep it plugged into an L2 at all times when possible.

I agree with this - my first 12v death almost 3 years ago (before the warnings/etc) had no indication and SOC was easily 50-60%. Be cautious if you go out. Also make sure that you are parking for easy towing just in case that becomes required.
