When will Rivian get CarPlay? Need better Nav and hands free text

If CarPlay is so important, I’m surprised you found out the car does not have it AFTER you’ve taken delivery.

Perhaps the business school should also teach what the product has to offer before one commits to purchase?

The Rivian nav system works fine for me. I always check the Rivian recommendation against my iPhone and 90% the same.

OP’s only other post is complaining about having to pay for internet service, which is also something Rivian said from day 1 would be a subscription, so it shouldn’t surprise anyone this person didn’t know there was no CarPlay.

It’s easier for some folks to complain than to hold themselves accountable for making large purchases without researching whether it has the features important to you.

How are you going to do trip planning based on battery status and charging locations, their availability and speed with car play or Android Auto?

I'm driving an android auto car right now and texting sucks. It won't read the message or let me reply. A passenger got it to display one after some sort of cryptic button presses. Having to swap back forth from the phone to the car display to get things done is annoying. Not really seeing a benefit over what rivian has implemented so far. This one is wire tethered and I wouldn't put up with plugging in my phone constantly. I guess that's why it wasn't even an option for me to consider on my legacy cars though it's wireless now on some cars.

It IS a big deal but I accept that it will never happen due to Amazon owning so much of Rivian. I leased a Chevy Volt for 10 years and carplay offered seemless and very accurate nav and effortless HANDS FREE communication which is a safety feature not just a convenience. IT IS a huge void but I still love the car despite not having it or a full size spare in the R1S and having to deal with poor repair service….still glad I am a one year owner.

Rivian needs to get CarPlay STAT (and whatever non-apple analogue). The Rivian NAV is truly terrible. Right now we have to use the Rivian cartography just to have the map on the screen but have Apple Maps narrate through the phone, which is cloogey and distracting. Also need hands free text narration, this is basic safety functionality.

We got our R1S in April and were shocked that it doesn’t have CarPlay and text narration like every other car does. We travel a lot so we’re in rental cars a couple times a month, which serves as a large sample size for comparison. CarPlay is ideal because you just plug in and go without having to learn any car’s own Nav.

The Rivian is great to drive, we’re happy to be part of the revolution and we’re trying to be a good sport while it grows up.

CarPlay is the buy vs build decision we all learned in business school: build what your competitive advantage is and buy what isn’t. They make a great car that needs to prioritize engineering core functionality and reliability, they shouldn’t make their own Nav in the same way they shouldn’t make their own tires or paper clips at HQ.

Simple answer: NEVER. Next?

I am always amazed at these posts, and people that claim infotainment is so important to them and don't spend 15 seconds checking before they buy.

Before you lecture us about business school, you may want to research WHY Rivian doesn't have Carplay.

And, my CarPlay experience in rental cars is horrible. I have to rent them all the time and their infotainment, if you can call it that, makes me appreciate Rivian all the more. I hope we never get it.

Not sure what's worse, posts insisting on a feature that we're clearly never getting or selfish arrogant responses proudly stating that because they don't need it, no one else should have it.

I don't need all of Carplay. Just add native Waze and I am good.

Built in nav sucks. For those who say they need the integrated charger routing, that isn't any better than looking at the map and figuring it out for yourself. Preconditioning the battery hasn't made any noticeable difference for me, but I also live in California where the weather is always warm.
