I took delivery of my R1T in June and will not be replacing it for some time. The Gen 2 vehicles have some nice improvements, but the R1T is impressive in it's own right.

The tentative plan is to eventually get an R2S, perhaps in 2027, selling both existing of our vehicles (the R1T and our Telluride) to go all-electric. The odds are overwhelming that by 2027 the EV infrastructure will have matured to the point that ICE vehicles are recognized as an endangered species. I suspect we will still need a second car, but that can be a small vehicle, hopefully the Aptera which I've had a pre-order in place for since 2022.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
I priced out a similarly optioned gen 2 R1S Tri Motor. It came out to more than 40% more than my gen 1 R1S Quad Motor. Yeah the reviews are great and it has better suspension, is a faster vehicle, has better range, and feels like a completely new vehicle. But not sure I can justify the additional cost. What about everyone else?
My math is simple: the price difference between my pre-hike gen1 and a new gen 2 is literally an R3 … so I’m going to get one of those instead.

Love the gen 2 features, and can’t wait to see those improvements in my (ok not really) free R3.

Only if they license FSD and have steer by wire with rear wheel steer. With its price point, can’t justify gen2 over gen 1.

In my house we refer to that as "Sweater Economics." Here's how it works...My wife will see a $200 sweater (that she doesn't need) on sale for $80 - it's a good deal so she buys it. The then proceeds to spend the $120 that she "saved" on other things because it's "free" money! The R3 is simply Sweater Economics on a larger scale :)

Agreed! My pre price hike R1S is like the deal of the century. So much car for the money. It might be too big for us but I just couldn’t pass on that deal. We’ll keep the R1 until the R3 comes out.

Then the R3S will be better than the R2S when it comes out, and so will be the R4S better than R3S, and so on. High tech keeps improving; it cannot ever be a reason to upgrade; get the best and greatest, it will be obsolete in a year or two, so to speak.
Like my R1S a lot. Range has not been and may never be a concern to me, especially now with the ubiquitous Tesla SC network open to Rivian.
0-60 in 3 seconds vs. 0-60 in 2.9 seconds. Same thing.
My R1S has been mechanically and functionally flawless since delivery last January 2024. But I do have corrosion on one of my doors, a factory problem, that requires repainting. Still waiting for the slower-than-slow Rivian customer support to address this. Will slap PPF and ceramic coating once repainted and call it a day. Plan on driving it until it no longer can go anymore.

Blank check: definitely getting a Gen2 Quad

Reality: Nope not now. My Gen1 R1S QM is amazing and can live without the upgraded features right now. Never know what happens in 26/27. I have a deposit on an R2 but could always consider a newer R1 when the time comes.

Hell no. It's what, probably 50k loss to go from a couple year old quad LE to a new quad with all the LE options?

Absolutely not. The Gen1 is overbuilt mechanically which matters the most to me. Sure it doesn't have the new cameras/sensors...

Holding the Gen1 for 8-10 years.
Would you mind clarifying how Gen1 is overbuilt? I’ve gotten this sense from being a fairly new owner in addition to some of the commentary here and am hopeful to put a large amount of miles on mine, but curious to hear your/anyone’s perspective. I know they found ways to economize G2 production but haven’t heard about experiences that indicate corners were cut or build quality has suffered per se?

This will definitely be a stretch but I wonder if these first gens will be remembered more favorably for this reason—def a false equivalence but I’m hoping it’s going to be the 200-Series Land Cruiser of EVs and am anticipating buying my DM R1S out at the end of its lease if I get the sense it can do another +70K miles over several years of off-roading with no headaches.

I will, when my lease for current R1 runs out in 2027. Really, really, hoping for captain's chairs - at least as an option - by then. Rest of the stuff is fine already for me.

And I have a R2 reservation as well.

If captain's chairs option doesn't pan out by then, will 'probably' return the R1S and go with the R2, although we will miss the space.

I'm really considering and watching carefully the feedback from the G2 R1T on this forum. I have had countless issues with my R1T in the first year. Spent almost 2 months in the service center when all added up. The suspension feels and sounds like the truck is going to fall apart, the sound system is just rattles. So much potential there, but too many misses for me in a vehicle priced like this. If G2 fixes this stuff, then it might be hard to not go for it. However, as another member said, I might wait until WA state has more service centers. Bellevue is an hour away and a 4-6 month wait.

I'm absolutely not upgrading. Why? There isn't any significant battery/efficiency tech, that merits the change for me. I really love my R1T and my wife is thrilled with her R1S. It was important for Rivian to make the changes in Gen2 significant for the masses, which was critical for sales, while they work on the R2, but there isn't a single compelling reason to sell and repurchase.

Was on the edge of reserving a quad R1T to replace my G1 QR1T. But cant see how an extra 60K ish is worth the difference in spec. I'd rather wait and get the G3 in 3 years or get a G2 after 18 months of depreciation (assuming 30%) for 85K ish. Keep the 40K saved by not buying new in RIVN and reduce the delta in the upgrade cost.

Nope, not a chance unless there's a big financial incentive to do so. I have no gripes with my 2022 R1T at all and I have a few more years of B2B warranty coverage anyway so I'm going to ride it out a while longer. There's a lot of cool stuff in the Gen 2 models but not enough for me to swallow the depreciation and the vastly higher price point of the new R1's relative to my pre-price hike and grandfathered tax incentive truck.

I might try and find a lightly used Quad Max once I'm ready to move my R1T on in the future but that's a while from now. I'm still very happy with mine and, if anything happened to it, would probably just buy another one lol.
