Though with all the new tech, it's not guaranteed that you will get top dollar for a 2022 Rivian.
The batteries could be better, motors improved, etc.

It all depends on that, and volume. If in 2024 Rivian is pumping out 75-100k trucks a year that get better mileage on the same or less batteries, I wouldn't buy a 2022 model for near 2024 costs.

But at least the price shouldn't drop for a used Rivian unless Rivian fails. So a 80k Rivian could get you near 80k back after 2 years of use? So that's nice...unless Rivian fails. In that case, well nobody wins except Tesla, Ford, GM, etc.

A man with sensible logic... Refreshing to see. ;);)

Not going to respond directly to the Tesla troll but this is it exactly. My R1T will cost me $75k but anyone who purchases a Rivian after 3/1 will pay $90k for that same truck with an earliest delivery in 2024. My point is that, if I so choose, I can sell my R1T in 2024 for at least what I paid for it and downgrade to a newer lesser equipped R1T that will be available starting in 2024 while potentially turning a profit.
Not only that, though.

For people like me the track record leading up to 2024 adds value. I see the lower pricing as compensation for the risk associated with buying from a startup. By 2024 there will be history of initial build quality, reliability, service, charging network, etc.

Unless Rivian goes belly-up, but that comes back to why early buyers get the lower pricing. I am going into this knowing that my ~$80,000 SUV may become an orphan, which isn’t great but acceptable to me. To me the same SUV at ~$100,000 is more than I’m willing to risk.

Yeah, as a software developer this seems like a nightmare to manage to me. But maybe their configurator is super flexible.
Not really. They just need to reverse the changes to Launch Editions, then add a Legacy Adventure and Legacy Explorer package with the old pricing. Anyone who ordered before March 1st is on the Legacy configs, anyone after uses the new config with the new pricing.

If my Adventure configuration is locked, I'm happy. If I can make changes and keep the old prices even better. I do wonder if we will be able to ask for the manual tonneau cover over the power one, although at the end of the day, I would probably just keep the power one.

I'm also wondering *what* they're going to hold to. Will it just be vehicle options? Or are they going to honor pre-increased accessories prices? I took the tent off yesterday. It's one of those things that they always said you could order after delivery, etc.
As a pre-order holder and investor, I would be okay if Rivian reversed the base pricing on all orders (i.e. no upcharge for quad motors or large pack), but stuck to the updated price increases for options/accessories like paint colors, tents etc.

For my LE R1S as configured pre March 1, that would mean spending $2k each on Ocean Coast or the underbody shield, which is a price increase that I would be comfortable with (<$5k) knowing that it is bringing in additional revenue for the company. Or, I could drop those options without dramatically changing the vehicle's capabilities and stick to my original price. As long as I get to make that choice, I'm a-ok.

I wonder how this is going to work. I can’t see us being allowed to switch to options that now cost more. In the past I’ve played with my config several times a week, luckily I had recently settled on my config and didn’t have something I wasn’t sure about.

Anyone worried they are going to be locked into a config they were just trying on in the Rivian dressing room?
I was wondering the same thing. I would not be surprised if any changes to the config after they restore what we all had before, will result in the new pricing. But, who knows?

Not smarter, probably just more experience. I work with a lot of big data sets :)

As someone who works in the tech space, it shouldn't be too hard to manage this. Just flag all customers with a pre-order date before 3/1 and send them to the old configuration page when they log in. Let them configure it, change it, etc. however they want like they could a week ago. All new pre orders would see the new page with new prices and options. Now, they might not have a history of your prior configuration, which might create a problem. I think most people played with the new configuration and saved it (I did). So they will probably ask people to go in and update their configuration once they cut over. Totally possible they have this working in a couple days.

I haven't changed my configuration once and don't intend to, but I suspect I won't be getting my 5-seater R1S now, haha. The good news is that I really wanted the front tow hooks, but not the full off-road package, and it looks like I'll likely get those thrown in on my Adventure. I'll take those as a consolation prize for having the extra seats forced upon me.

On my adventure I would love to be able to get the manual tonneau…. I would even pay my config price that included the powered one. $77550 is my config price…. Rivian could charge me $77550 and give me a manual tonneau instead of the power and I would be ecstatic. The price difference using the new configurator would be a win for Rivian.

maybe when I get contacted to finalize I will discuss this win win situation for both of us.

My plan has always been to select everything I want until I get closer to my delivery date. Then trim down based on where I'm at with that down payment. Not much point in saving config changes until prices are about to be locked in when you accept delivery.

Good on Rivian for the about-face but I personally didn't think it was reasonable of people to be surprised by price changes. "Subject to change" was all over the place in the config process. Inflation is insane. The already-busted supply chain just lost access to Russia and Russian airspace. I probably wouldn't have jacked it up for LE-holders if it was my decision to make though. Gotta keep your early adopters talking up the product, not asking themselves if it now costs too much.

Built the way I wanted it. No changes...except I would prefer a 5-seater...oh well.
