Ordered a 2025 R1S Gen 2. Looking to get an SSD for the dash cam feature. Wondering what speed and size I should get now that the cameras have been significantly updated. Is 2TB overkill is size? Would 1050MB/s suffice?

Rivian R1T R1S R1S Gen 2 SSD Drive 1718549414717-xd

Owner's Guide Gen 2 specs. R1S records 4 cameras in both Gear Guard and Drive Cam modes. Do we know the difference in resolution (edit: and encoding can make a big difference) between Gen1 and Gen2?

A 256GB is fine for my R1T (5 lowish res cameras). I'd probably get at least 1TB for a Gen2 (or go 2TB, which is max) assuming there's no big premium in price.

Does the system just overwrite old files upon the SSD filling up? How many days does your 256gb keep?

I'd just max it out with the new cameras having much higher quailty surely the files will be larger.

I picked up a SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD with 1TB. I had a smaller 256GB flash drive but it burned out, started to intermittently eject from the truck, I think it just overwhelmed it on longer drives with the consistent writing to the drive. Also worth while getting a 90 degree usb-c adapter, keeps cables from getting hit etc when putting items in the console.

Pros of the SanDisk
- Cheap, around 100cdn on amazon
- Durable, have had the 2tb version for photography and movies for nearly 3 years, not a single issue or lost file
- Stays relatively cool even under full read/write
- Gear Guard drive cam/incidents are extremely snappy on the rivian UI because of the high throughput of the drive.
- Lots of cool colo(u)rs

Cons
- Nothing.

Most Costco stores have SanDisk 1-TB SSD drive in stock for $79.99 plus state/local tax:

https://www.costco.com/sandisk-1tb-extreme-go-ssd-.product.4000175415.html

Consider also your choice of 90-degree USB-C to USB-C adapters, so the relatively short connecting cable can let the SSD drive lie pretty much flat on the console floor.

That combination installed on our 2023 R1S and 2023 R1T in three minutes or so. Very smooth....

Best wishes!

I second the 90 degree adaptor and the Samsung 256 option but I’m also in a Gen 1 T and have had no issues and have saved/transferred videos of need and importance without issue!

Just for fun - May-2026 and the Samsung T7 is $500 on Amazon
You can thank all the AI data-centers for driving up the price of ram. I just bought a 1 TB T7 from Amzn resale for $250 for the R1T. I was planning to build a new PC, but I think I will make mine last a little longer.
