I drop my kids off at school. They have greeters who open the car door from the outside. Without physical lock/unlock controls, how do I "present" the door handles so they can open the rear passenger door?
Click/touch the little lock icon in the upper left hand of the center display. I found that one out accidentally.

Might be because in the Teslas they all are frameless doors so the windows are always slightly down when the door shuts then comes up a little more.
Rivian may have to add this feature.

My 2016 Dodge Challenger has always done this with the windows.

1. Put it in park when the greeters come to get the kids. Handles present.
2. Turn off bluetooth at night.
3. No clue on that one. Guess we're all at risk.
4. You leave your phone and wallet in your vehicle in a public place? Probably not a good idea.
1. Good to know.
2. No can do. I get blackout drunk every night. I will inevitably forget to shut off bluetooth before passing out on an especially rambunctious night. /s
4. Not only that, I also run with scissors.

The park to unlock and then drive to lock takes some getting used to. Friend or family shows up and i'm looking around for the unlock button.

That scares the heck out of me. What prevents this scenario...

I'm at a family campout.
Phone proximity lock/unlock is enabled.
Truck is unlocked and "ready to go" because I'm only sitting 10 feet away.
My 12 year old nephew surreptitiously gets in the drivers seat, engages drive, and presses the go pedal. Hilarity/tragedy ensues.

A couple other scenarios I'm thinking about:
Thieves figured out how to intercept Tesla's proximity key signals to steal cars right out of the owner's driveway. We all hear warnings about how Bluetooth isn't secure. Is that a worry?
Both would be solved by the "PIN to Drive" feature that Tesla currently offers on the model Y and Model 3.

I emailed Rivian about adding this to their GUI, they liked the idea and said they would look in to it.
Please reach out to Rivian CS reps and let them know "PIN to Drive" is an important safety feature to have....

Funny thing is, all of these issues would automatically be resolved if they turned the metal key into a passive key. I can't understand why that key is not passive. But I guess if you don't have a touch capacitive surface then the key would always be pinged so battery on the key would likely run out very quickly.
My parent's Lexus had a key fob that would unlock the car when you touched the door handle (i.e.; proximity plus touch) and would activate the car's START button when within range. The battery on the fob died within a year. They replaced it and another year later both the fob battery and the car's 12v battery died. Turns out that as long as the fob is in range of the car (20 to 30 FEET!) they kept chatting back and forth, slowly using up the batteries. When I bought my current Outback in 2018, my dealer warned me to, for the same reason, keep the key fob as far away from the garage as possible or even to store it in a faraday bag when I'm not using it/driving.

The faraday bag is an inexpensive way to protect the fob and eliminate the "fob-car chatter", thus protecting the battery. Alas that would kind of cause all sorts of other issues if you were to try the same thing with the phone. ;)

Seems like it could be a huge problem for people who have a bedroom near their driveway. Sounds like their Rivians' would be unlocked all night if they slept with their phone near them, which most of us do.

  • If I park at the trailhead and go for a run, leaving my phone and wallet inside the truck, how do I lock the truck when I walk away? Is the truck smart enough to realize it's locked with the phone proximity key inside?
Isn’t this what the wrist band is for? I think you’d want to turn off Bluetooth on your phone, place phone and wallet in the center console, and then lock and unlock with the wristband. I don’t have a Rivian yet, but that’s my best guess.

I know this all seems like a minor gripe but when you live with it for a few days you'll get sick of it pretty quickly.
Doesn't sound minor to me, sounds like a pretty serious design flaw.

Yes, with my Tesla I put my phone in airplane mode and keep the keycard with me. I make sure to use a running short with a zipper pocket when I do this. Looking forward to the rivian wristband.

I did this to my Prius C. After the 2nd 12v battery, I started keeping my keys in a metal container inside the house.

Sounds like there are some issues Rivian needs to work out. Guess that's the risk going with a new company. I'm sure they will have updates someday. This whole thread makes me feel like I'm living in the dark ages. Only 1 of my 4 cars has touch entry, one with a key fob and the other two don't even have a fob, just a regular key.

What about people camping? If they are sleeping on the R1T roof; isn't it going to go crazy with the lock/unlock?

Yes, it's very easy to disable the feature altogether. One toggle button. So for things like camping you'd definitely turn it off even if was working great

The wristband is pretty cool. You have to rub it against the surface of the door handle for it to work. But I believe it does work. I might actually try to just use that going forward and see if that works well for me as a solution. Stay tuned.
