Ouch.

We have a single crack in the roof glass, which I suspect, but can't prove (or deny) either way, was caused when my wife just caught the shark-fin antenna backing into the garage. Looking at the security camera footage, it's not clear, but my best guess is that it pushed the fin in slightly, causing the glass to crack.

Labor rates, at least in Dallas, are $200ph, so this is the breakdown for anyone interesting. The glass is one thing, but apparently the rear spoiler is sacrificed to replace the glass, so that is also replaced at a cost of $1770:

Rivian R1T R1S Cost to replace cracked R1T roof glass - $2209 1664228240530

So overall, 2-3x more than a Model 3 roof, and the Rivian roof is substantially weaker. Not cool.

Apparently the spoiler also gets sacrificed if you break the rear window glass. Seems like a poor design choice.

I'm extremely interested on what my back window will cost to replace, was using a electric blower on the tonneau getting rid of some water and a few passes over the rear and whole thing shattered. I'm not sure why Rivian went with glass reinforced with good intentions instead of what everyone else uses. But hopefully they cover this first one.

Wait, the Tesla roof only cost 1k to replace? I'm actually impressed.
We paid $950 in 2019, current estimates range from that to $1250 depending on local labor rates.

Small update, the SC just called me back again (the comms between the tollfree number, the local SC, and the tech that actually works on the car have been awful), they've now relented on needing to completely replace the spoiler, I guess they somehow read there were scratches (there are, on the shark fin, but not on the spoiler itself, as would be obvious with a quick check on their part).

There's 4 screws that hold the shark fin in place from below (together with VHB tape), they all immediately striped and vanished at the sudden detachment of the fin, so as long as I'm happy not having those 4 screws replaced/reinserted, then I don't need a new spoiler. I'm ok with that if it saves $1700. Very easy to re-secure the shark fin with VHB tape, and a bead of black caulk if I'm feeling extra-fancy.

Assuming your insurance would cover this? At least anything beyond the amount of your deductible.

The glass bit of the insurance? Honestly, I've not checked, but if people have managed to claim for (self inflicted) damage to the roof under the glass deducible, then for sure. Rivian Insurance (or, more accurately, our Guide) couldn't get their $hit together in time for delivery, and Tesla didn't have the Rivian VIN's loaded into their database, so I switched everything to Costco/American Family.

That's what insurance is for. I would reach out to them right away.

I’d be tempted to just drive it with the crack. Presumably it’s laminated and cracked only on one side, so still watertight. Also, if on the outside a windshield repair kit might keep it going for some time (cyanoacrilate glue wicking into the crack).

Living in windshield killing CO I always pay for the glass coverage on my insurance. It is totally worth it. And I imagine will get plenty of use once I get my R1T?

I did, there would be a $1k deductible, and it would count as a collision claim. So, not worth it.

Yeah, I considered that, I hate the though of my new truck being imperfect though! I can only feel the crack on the inside, which is weird, considering the impact was (allegedly) on the outside. The crack extents from the center of the rear all the way to the edge above the passenger seat.

$3,700 to replace, $1,000 deductible, means they would cover $2,700 of it? Seems worth it to me. That's what we have insurance for.

Some insurance companies have separate windshield coverage as well. Not sure the roof would fall into that category. But, for windshields, usually the deductible doesn't apply if you have the glass coverage on your policy.

Can't hurt to ask your agent what's covered and what's not and see if there are any repercussions from making a claim. Might not fall into a collision category. Would at least ask questions. Obviously entirely up to you

Um, that’s worth it, I would think. What are you worried about? Insurance is in a pool so you won’t have your rate jacked up automatically.
