Are these cards for an external camera or is this what everyone is planning to use with the internal cam if/when it gets enabled?
Between the Rivian Stories QA with Wassym and the recently shared OTA update, it seems everyone here is excited to have official feedback for the dash am functionality of inboard cameras

the docs shared specified the dashcam would require a minimum of 128GB storage that has to be plugged into the center console usb c slots

Ive never used a dash cam. So will the software rewrite over the oldest footage continuously? Or will we have to manually dump when the disk gets full?

If there is a constant rewrite you might not have to get such a big memory card correct? Just pull it after an "incident"?

That's what I figured.
Never had luck using USB stick as a constant source for read/write, they have all died within 6-12 months. Used on Switch, Wii U, security system, etc.

A good microSD like you linked has never failed me yet in my dashcams or networking systems where they are running an OS.

I may try something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Keychain-Leizhan-Adapter-Compatible-Windows/dp/B09L4NDV4T/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=micro+sd+to+usb+c&qid=1681823389&s=electronics&sprefix=micro+sd+to+us,electronics,96&sr=1-3

Or an actual external drive that is better rated for the usage.
They really just need a user replaceable m.2 slot solely for video storage.
I wanted to reuse my old 512 gb microSD from my old dashcam. I tried using a USB-C microSD reader and it didn't detect anything.

I'm looking at using this USB C to SD Card reader dongle; paired with the SanDisk 256 High Endurance card. Eliminates the need for an extra adapter piece but keeps things low profile.

update: can confirm this set up works with the new update. The truck auto formats the drive when you plug it in for the first time. Super easy.

What I ordered:
Rivian R1T R1S Show off your dashcam memory card install 20230418_094307

I forgot the cubby has a sloped wall there so I have ordered this to fix the aspect and overhang:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BNMDRWR6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It should turn it left and pointing at the 9 o'clock position. When that adapter arrives I will try to get a good shot of it's clearance and attitude.

I don't use the cubby much as I have the BestEVMod console organizer on top. The right side adapter is to plug my phone in: used to have 2 adapters there.

Tested a copy to the drive right out of the package and it worked fine with no formatting or folder but I will go back and test where it sits on the stick.

Samsung T7 ssd drive and call it day. Works really well. Watch out for thumb drives that heat up. This will degrade performance over time
Seconding this. Samsung T7 or similar USB-C SSD drive. I've tried different flavors of flash drives and microSD in my Tesla and they all die from the write cycles in 6-12 months.

Yes if it’s like every other dash cam recording logic it will fill up the drive then start overwriting the oldest data. So there would be plenty of time to grab the footage after an incident and maybe Rivian will also lock any event recordings (horn honks, hard braking, collisions) so that those clips do not get overwritten. It’s pretty much set and forget until you actually need to pull footage. The larger memory sizes are only really if you want to be able to access very old footage. I’m not sure how large the records are though to determine how much footage will take up 128GB of space or so.

LOL exactly the same here:

I had a 90 degree adapter and a Samsung 256GB drive and I forgot about the slope.

I'll pick up those adapters linked.

I went ahead and just got a T7 shield. Will likely velcro it to the side of the console. Might buy a shorter USB c to c cord to have it look cleaner.

Great thread/posts here fellow Rivian's. I've been using this (Vantrue N4 3 Channel 4K Dash Cam, 4K+1080P Front and Rear) in my Hybrid minivan since last June & had plan to move it to my R1S, later this summer (3Q), but with accessory port removal from under dashboard & the good news posted here that using the cameras on the R1's as a dashcam is coming soon, I'll just be getting a heavy duty thumb drive & a cable/90 connector. Thanks for the great suggestions!

Sorry guys. I’ve never owned a dashcam so this is all new to me. Can someone explain why you can’t just plug in a USB and forget about it? What’s the point of the adapter?

This is what I am going with. I am not comfortable with using a usb drive that is not designed for constant write and high temperatures. I ordered a usb C micro SD adapter and a Samsung Endurance micro SD card.

For anyone interested, buy a micro SD card designed for this in the largest capacity possible. Something like a Sandisk Max Endurance 256GB. The larger the capacity, the higher the total data written TDW.

https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Endu...refix=sandisk+max,electronics,108&sr=1-2&th=1

I'm going to use an Anker USB-C to Micro SD adapter. I don't want this failing on me when I need it most. Also keep the receipt for the Sandisk, if it ever fails it comes with a 15 year warranty. Don't use USB flash drives as they are not designed for this. An external SSD should be OK but your best bet is the micro SD card.
