Sorry guys. I’ve never owned a dashcam so this is all new to me. Can someone explain why you can’t just plug in a USB and forget about it? What’s the point of the adapter?
A typical USB drive is designed to be used at home, at room temperature, and for occasional write and re-write. There are micro SD cards that are specifically designed for high temperatures and constant write and re-writes, typical for a dashcam.

Most of the flash memory in standard USB sticks isn't designed for constantly being written to and over. It will cause the cells that make up the NAND flash memory to fail quite quickly. You need flash storage that's specifically designed for this like a Sandisk Max Endurance micro SD card. I'd recommend it over the Sandisk High Endurance as it's not much more money and should last a lot longer. Also go with the highest storage you can afford as the more flash storage, the more it can be written to before failing (Total Data Written - TDW). I.e. a 256GB should last twice as long as a 128GB which should last twice as long as a 64GB etc. There's obviously a lot of variables at play, heat is especially bad for killing flash which is why I also recommend good name brand SD card readers, the cheap ones can work fine but I've also seen them get burning hot which will absolutely shorten the life of it. The micro SD card that I listed above has a 15 year warranty and I've yet to have an issue with Sandisk rejecting a warranty claim of mine, just keep the receipt.

My view is why skimp on a couple bucks when this could prove to your insurance company you weren't at fault for totaling your $100k SUV. It's such a small price. I'm actually going to carry two of those cards in my R1S, so on the rare chance it fails I can immediately throw the backup one in while I send the other to be replaced under warranty.

I just bought this off Amazon. 2TB Sandisk ultra portable SSD on sale right now. It's waterproof too unlike the Samsung T7 drive.

Edit: NVM, Sandisk doesn't list out TBW lifespan for this drive and only has 3 year warranty. So the max endurance SD card is most likely better.

Thank you! I’ll look into both these products.

This is another good reader incase you want it with a cable so you don't accidentally snag it when getting something in or out of the center console.

What's your thoughts on using SSD like a Samsung t7 shield?

Will post fitment photos Saturday, went with the suggested: 90* to the side adapter + Anker SD reader + Samsung Pro Endurance 128mb microSD
$36 wasted/hopefully invested in future music playback ??

OP. I have a suggestion. Create a Top 3 list on your original post of the products that via peer review seem to be the best options for us R1 owners. This will obviously be fluid, but at least it's on the main post of this thread.

so idea is to use a T7 instead of a an micro sd card reader and extreme micro sd card because the readers tend to be non ruggedized and likely to fail?

SSD throughput is much higher than micro sd card. In normal dash cam you have one camera recording, with Rivian recording 360 view bandwidth requirement may be much higher. After reading few threads in Tesla forums, personally decided to go with Samsung T7 Shield SSD route.
