Because I had 2 hours to let it run and we've never had updates that have bricked the vehicle before. Ironically, last night was the FIRST time I'd ever kicked off an update when not at home. Figures. So, yes, it was dumb of me, but this 100% should not happen, either.
But....it's not bricked. Far from it - so you can't listen to Spotify - relax.

This absolutely sucks for all those impacted and there should be systems in place to prevent something like this from happening. I’m sure Rivian is doing everything they can to get this figured out and fixed with an OTA hotfix.

All vehicles today rely on software to function and there is a risk of something going wrong. It’s the software engineers responsibility to minimize those risks to the furthest extent possible. For example I had VW ID.4 that got a software update that bricked the vehicle. It took a solid 6 weeks at the dealer to get it up and running again. Certainly not an excuse, but it does happen to others.

Rivian will be judged more on how they respond to this and get it corrected. There will be some that this is the last straw and they abandon the brand. If they get this corrected quickly and painlessly it will be a thing of the past for most. For me the big thing that will change is I’ll likely wait at least a day before installing any update in the future.
FWIW I don't see how they can fix this with an OTA - there is no connectivity to roll this back or further update. Will require mobile or full SC visit.

Lots of comments downplaying this issue and saying it’s safe and drives fine. I just called and support said “we are recommending people don’t drive the vehicle at this time.” So their direction is all over the place during 1on1 conversations and they actually have no clue if it’s safe to drive. No one has actually tested this fully. Plus, absolutely unsafe in many situations. What happens if you need to defrost? What happens if it’s 100+ degrees and you have a baby in the car? What if your wife was the last one to drive the car and now your mirror settings are off, but you drive it anyway? Etc. Has anyone tested DCFC yet? Is it drivable? Sure. Is it as safe to drive as it was 24 hours ago? it is not.

I’d also add that I’ve seen zero official Rivian announcements or reach outs. Yes, their head of SW posted something on his account on Reddit, but is that “official?” I was shocked that I woke up to no emails, nothing on their website or official social media. There is no fix yet and no ETA. It’s been over 12 hours and that is unacceptable. At this point they have a good idea of how this is probably going to play out (hours vs days, OTA vs service center) and they need to tell us so we can plan accordingly.

Yes, we all bought a car from a brand new company and expected growing pains. But I’ve seen no signs that they have handled this mistake well and we should be downplaying the severity. I said at the beginning that if i woke up to a fix I’d quickly forgive and forget and feel fine moving forward. Waking up to no fix and no official communication (let me know if i missed it) is not great.

Wow - first software glitch I can recall (I've had the truck since Aug '22) and the hyperbole on here is pretty crazy. People are 'livid'?? The car is a 'burden' and 'inconvenience'? About a glitch that in no way affects the truck's ability to drive, or indicate or show you speed and battery state?
I actually find it somewhat reassuring that the infotainment system can be completely broken and I won't end up stranded somewhere because of it. I suppose there is a slight potential that you might be stuck in a speed limited drive mode if it happens while off-roading, but I digress.

Anyone is free to call me a Rivian apologist if that makes them feel better though.

The vehicle still communicates with the app. You see mileage updates in the app after driving it. You can set pre-conditioned temp with the app. So, it means the vehicle has connection with the cloud still.

I agree with this mostly. I would also add that Rivian has an opportunity to learn, make improvements, and communicate those improvements to the community. All of these are strictly positive outcomes, and is a chance for Rivian to show what type of organization they are.

EDIT: I should add that so far they are doing the right things. Admitting fault, explaining the issue, mostly being responsive to customer calls, and promising to use every lever in their company to find a solution.

Overseas sw devs? I don't like the sound of that. It does shed some light on the disconnect however...
The company my wife works for had developers in Canada, Europe and Nepal. The Nepal devs were incredible, super positive, and extremely good at thinking outside the box.

I figured it didn't have Wi-Fi or LTE connectivity and only had BT...but happy to be wrong on that front.

Not the first. Back in maybe April there was a multi-hour cloud issue that prevented many from accessing their vehicles with their Phone as a Key (PaaK). Most of us now carry a keycard in our wallets just in case.

Still yet to be seen if I actually have HVAC use because I left my truck last night with temperature control turned off because it wasn't needed. If this issue persists, it's going to get cold here again and I'll be very unhappy if I can't be warm. Similarly, it becomes a safety issue if you need to defrost the windows and have no access to that feature.

I drove my R1S this morning without infotainment. Worked just like the old Odyssey I had: it got me to and from where I needed to go. Didn’t need cameras, didn’t need nav, didn’t need engine telemetry. Just good old fashioned “turn around and look out the rear window” driving skills.

Dude… really. Good software development is pretty global now and if companies aren’t utilizing developers 24/7 somewhere in the world, it’s considered less competitive.

Rivian has a strong team of developers in Serbia.
Well, ok, sounds legit but...

Two failed updates in a row would suggest a disconnect somewhere...

I would say you're probably right, but if they can figure out a way to correct it OTA that would be the best outcome possible. I kind of think of it as a phone or something that you have ton reboot into recovery mode and physically connect it to apply a fix/rollback. That's speaking in very simplistic terms, but if it's something like that hopefully it can be done through a mobile visit.

Hope all that are impacted are back to 100% ASAP.

Definitely still has internet access...ElectraFi and the app are still updated/working.

Triple down now?

How about just opening up and admit you're racist?
