Unlikely to happen any time soon. Even if you did it with OBD vs GPS-based tracking other states would never agree. There'd be no way to know how many miles you did in your home state vs others and no way to share that revenue. Almost no one will agree to GPS-based mileage tracking. Not to mention, even with OBD checks that means going somewhere to have it done. One of the perks of going to an EV is never having to go to the emissions check place and spending even more money to get checked.I'm fine with paying my fair share but EV registration fees are the lazy way out. Fuel taxing is no longer an effective way to pay for our infrastructure. They should eliminate fuel taxes and move to a usage based fee.
They could charge a high fee for say 35,000 miles per year usage and then allow folks to opt into a program where they have their mileage scanned annually and only be charged based on their mileage.
Many states already have kiosks for emissions testing where they scan a vehicle via OBD port. Those could be utilized for this purpose.
Seriously. Of all the places I've lived, Colorado is the highest of all of them for vehicle registration because of that damnable ownership tax. I don't think any of the other states I've lived in have charged a usage/ownership tax annually...the sales tax was enough for them.I would take any of your reg costs. Colorado is the land of taxes. Want to buy a vehicle? Gimme tax, want to drive your vehicle? Ownership tax yearly. 1st year on R1S was $1800.
