My A2Z adapter arrived yesterday and I stopped at the local Tesla SC to try it out. It will it be useable unless the locking tab is completely forward which is very difficult to do when first using it. I put a couple of light sewing machine oil on the tab and that seemed to do the trick. Even though my battery was at 73% and not preconditioned, I got 121 kW right away and it tapered down to the 87 kW in the photo after a short while.

I believe others have said the initial use is a bit difficult, but it should "break in."

I was prepared for the difficulty to lock the adapter but it was more than difficult ... it was obscenely so. The drop of light oil really helped.

Ordered on 3/18.

I used mine for the first time today. I tried yesterday and couldn't get it on - a friend saw my post and called and told me that you really have to hit it. That worked! So here's what I did, for anyone finding this when searching a2z like I did (thanks OP for letting me add to your post). Put the tesla plug into the a2z adapter, push it as far in as it will go. At this point, mine would not yet lock. So I hold the tesla plug with the a2z adapter on it pointing straight up in one hand, and then bang down on the top of the adaptor (by top, I mean hit with a flat hand or fist where the plug prongs are) with my other hand, and that worked. That locked in the a2z adapter. Maybe this breaks in after a while, or maybe I'll one day oil it or something, but for now just a simple "bop" on the adapter to seat it down on the tesla plug did the trick for me. Sharing this in case it helps.

I mean I have an order on an A2Z too and will use it this summer, but it makes me wonder if they've already seen something in the field.

Nope. CYA is all.
I agree. CYA.

There is no way Rivian can know what sort of cheap, poorly designed adaptor one might use. Saying that “Use of unapproved adapters CAN result in damage to your vehicle.” is not the same as saying that such use WILL result in damage. It’s entirely possible that perfectly good third party adaptors are/will be on the market. Rivian is just not in the position to be testing them all. Therefore, it’s perfectly reasonable that they can’t stand behind them. Ergo, they absolutely had to put out a blanket disclaimer statement to cover their ass.

I guess time will tell, as more people start using A2Z and other adaptors. So far, I have not heard of any issues with the A2Z adaptors.

Page 281 in the R1T manual has the specs to the NACS adapter. Both A2Z and Rivian go up to 1000v. Rivian’s doesn’t state the amps.

Used our Lectron adapter for the first time on a TESLA supercharger. Worked with no issues. Easy to activate and de activate using the Rivian screen. Simple followup email showing the use and charges associated with the session. Nice to have access to almost all charging stations currently available

(Not directed at @Singletracker , just using the post for reference)
This has been the stance by manufacturers forever - if a third party accessory causes damage to a vehicle, they will do everything in their power to shed liability in the damage- so stating as much is common. Just makes sense. They cannot void warranty just by the use of any third party item, only in the damage caused. For now, the only thing Rivian has to go on is the testing done with the Tesla provided adapters. They obviously aren't going to go out and test every option.

That all said, there is the UL listing that is hanging over their heads that as soon as it becomes a reality, will change this stance a bit. Once Tesla UL lists their NACS, the vague requirement to only use their adapter is out the window as you will be able to use any item with the same listing. They will also need to UL list their adapter. So far, A2Z and Lectron have both said that once the listing is no longer just an outline, they will be applying for the listing. This throws the testing onto the adapter manf thru UL. At that point we should start seeing their verbiage change to something like "if you use a non-UL listed adapter, any damage caused by said device will not be covered under warranty" This was a good part of the point of standardizing the NACS. As a standard, as long as the criteria is met (UL listed) it should be good to use. A2Z has been performing the UL tests based on the outline already, so when the time comes, they should have no issues.

In other words, "You can have a drink of the cool, refreshing water but *ONLY* if you use our cup." I call bull-hockey on this.
I agree to a point. If you are thirsty enough, you will use their cup.

I am in no hurry to get the adapter so I will wait. I won't risk my $100,000 R1T to an unauthorized adapter. The A2Z are probably just fine, but if something does happen and Rivian finds out it wasn't their adapter, you will have little recourse.
