Any updates on receiving the Tesla charging adapter?

I just placed my order for the A2Z adapter. Hopefully it gets here before my road trip.

If not, ICE it is. (which might actually be cheaper anyways)

In CA, a major road trip (2+ stop) without access to an AC charger overnight at the destination is definitely more expensive than taking a similar sized ICE car.

I'm facing the same decision for July, but my ICE is 14 years old... exchanging luxury/modern tech for convenience and cost.

Do I take the 2005 Saturn Relay Mini-Van with 68k miles, that actually get decent highway MPG at 25mpg. Has decent, but not great AC. But would allow me to take out 2 seats on one side to create sort of a bed for when the driver gets tired. I dont 100% trust this van. But has yet to breakdown since we have owned it, but we have only owned it for 10 months.

Or

Do I take the 2004 GMC Envoy with 378k miles, that gets 16mpg, I trust it more than my Rivian, has great AC, better than the Rivian, and it also rides better than the Rivian.

Its 10 stops round trip to charge if I take the Rivian. 4 of those stops are free, except time. Total charging time is 9 hours.

Its 3 stops round trip to fuel the Saturn (500+ miles to a tank, 25 gallon tank)

Its 5 stops round trip to fuel for the GMC (300+ miles to a tank, 21 gallon tank)

I am really leaning towards taking one of the ICE, just for sheer convenience, and time saving.

How are you getting free charging and still be under 9 hrs total? I thought there were no free DC chargers for Rivian.

And I wasn't laughing at people who lost their jobs, I was laughing at a ridiculous anti-Tesla comment, on a forum topic about Tesla providing adapters to Rivian owners so they could use Tesla's superior charging network. You know, biting the hand that is feeding them.

Will you NEED to charge to 100% each time? Are the chargers you’ve mapped out that far apart that you’d need 100% from most sessions? On all of our road trips, IFF I’ve charged to more than 90% it’s been the opening leg from home or from the departure point. Then after that it’s been topping to 80-85% after that at most and our charge sessions have been anywhere between 5 and 37min tops at DCFC. And most of our trips have been towing our R-Pod.

If you’re still getting free RAN access max those out within time reason. On ours the kW rate drops to 50s into the 80% range.

Does anyone have an update on receiving the tesla charging adapter?

Received mine 2-3 wks ago, about 1-2 wks after they contacted me via app. Have used it at Tesla stations in Seattle and Burlington, WA area...worked like a charm. Incendently, sold an R1S to a Tesla owner while charging. He was on the fence and I let him pour over mine and ask questions and he said he was going home to order his R1! Haha. Take that Elon!

The fuel cost between EV versus ICE is one factor, but at my age comfort is a bigger factor than fuel cost. My R1T is the best road trip vehicle I have ever used. I’m far less fatigued in it.

It's up to Tesla who can use what adapters on their charging network.

Perhaps I'm naive but how would Tesla know what kind of adapter is being used? I don't think there is anything "smart" in there communicating with the charger. It just passes the energy through from one set of terminals to the other, right?

If they knew, wouldn't they actively be preventing the A2Z or Lectron ones from working? Why are they working?

They can tell what kind of vehicle is on the other end, which is why you can't charge a Hyundai with the Tesla or A2Z adapters but can do a Ford or Rivian.

Now, if there's a problem, they could do an investigation, ask Rivian or Ford (for instance) if they'd shipped an 'official' adapter to the customer. If no, they could try to go after you for damages or tell you to piss up a rope for seeking damages. But as long as things go smoothly, they'll never know.

As @LivingInKaos notes, the only reason the Tesla adapter is the only 'approved' one is because it set the standard and UL hasn't approved any others. Rivian will respect that until it isn't true any longer. As soon as UL gives the stamp of approval to some other manufacturers, I'm sure they'll be allowed too, otherwise the subsidies (aka, Elon's lifeblood) for the charger network will be at risk.
