Honestly, I’d be happy if could just plug my iPhone in via usb and be able to have lossless music controlled through the Rivian UI. It sounds better than Bluetooth, and since I drive through long cellular dead zones on a regular basis, I won’t loose music.

I think Rivian is missing the boat a bit on the CP/AA. $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year to allowing mirroring your phone on the screen is all Rivian needs to do. If it creates a bit of chaos for the subscribers to adjust their climate controls or adjust suspension or navigate to a charger so be it. People want CP/AA at least make money off those people imo

And, so what? Rivian's map and route planning are worse. The challenge was to name a car with its own EV route planning and CarPlay. Stop moving the goal posts.
Ford, and a few GMs. GM has gone to Android Automotive with Google integrated. Better than CP or AA, and more capabilities than Rivian.

While waiting for the appearance of rudimentary messaging to be integrated, we are missing out on working voice assistants and the newer technologies like AI assistants that are making their way to phones.

I fear Rivian will be forever trying to catch up, my long gone 2019 Tesla M3 was much more useful and I seem to see the pace of new features slowing, especially for gen1 vehicles.

My R1S is a great people and gear hauler but in many respects is far from perfect. But when you are chasing old features like simple messaging, perhaps you might deploy your limited developer resources to where they add unique value and let the losers like me use CarPlay/AA.

i said "proper" infotainment and planning features. Porsche's infotainment is not proper (aka it's not good) and their carplay integration doesn't even have any planning features, so no i'm not moving goal posts. I'll be more direct. Porsche's implementation sucks. If someone took away your Rivian infotainment and gave you Porsches, you would be banging your head on a wall. It's terrible.
I agree with the person that you’re replying to; the Rivian experience is just as bad. My current solution is to not use the built software at all. I use it for cameras and drive modes very occasionally. If I need directions, I find them on Google/Apple Maps and put my phone on the dash mount. If I’m doing a road trip I use ABRP and then manually select the chargers on the Rivian system between stops so that I can get preconditioning. And even then it tries to reroute me sometimes. It’s incredibly frustrating when I seem to know more about my battery than my truck does and I have to fight the truck to get it to just precondition.

I understand what Rivian is trying to do and I respect it. But at the end of the day I don’t want another hub or control center or “experience”. I want a vehicle that gets me from point A to point B using electric instead of gas.

RJ’s Ph.D is in internal combustion engines. A visionary he is not. Rivian by and large copies Tesla. I wouldn’t say his words have much weight here. Rivian software is terrible.

I would disagree. I've driven the Taycan extensively, and while it has ev routing through Apple Maps in Carplay, it's horribly simplistic. You can't filter chargers, speeds, waypoints, or anything. You have no control over what random charger it will take you too. Additionally, Porsche's own maps sucks too. Buttons are small, settings are all over the place, and it's hard to find what you're looking for there too.
I work for porsche, they can't make software or radios, their UI is and always has been a disaster. Every ticket that comes through the shop has a carplay complaint on it. Rivian is doing the right thing here

Why do you dislike RIvian's navigation so much? I have only had my R1T for 2 months but have really liked Rivian's navigation. I sometimes compare it to Google Maps just to see and most of the time they both pick the same route.

Put those engineers to work on more important things, AA and CP already have texting integration figured out! No need to reinvent the wheel.
That's like Apple deciding to support Windows on a MAC because Microsoft has already solved <miscellaneous problem XYZ>

His reasoning for no Car play is rock-solid.

I'm fine with Rivian developing its own ability to text, etc., but I just don't see them developing anything like Waze who has a large community of volunteer reporters of traffic levels, etc. Waze is a must after texting. That, and maybe better podcast support, is all I ever used CarPlay for. The phone portion needs to be better too, now that I think of it. What else do people use CarPlay for that is needed?

Maybe his "internal" reasoning is rock-solid but the BS he's trying to get us to buy isn't. Its 100% about wanting to charge for subscriptions and selling customer data not that they can do it better or that they don't want Apple controlling the frunk.
