Wondering if anyone else experiences this.. When charging at home (with a Tesla charger) my R1S will charge at a reasonable rate for the first hour and then will drop often by half for the remaining charge time… Any insights?

Mine does the same thing. It's the thermistor in the NACS handle getting too hot and thermally throttling the charge rate. At least, that's my first guess. It gets - and stays - really hot in the garage here in the Florida panhandle. I've wrapped cold packs around the end of the plug, but it doesn't last much longer than a few extra minutes.

Does your Tesla wall charger have a red light at the top, but still shows the green lights "flowing" (charging at a reduced rate)? If so, it's likely the handle is getting too hot and the wall charger is protecting you from overheating. That's a (very) good thing.

I have a Tesla charger too - and have the same issue, especially with the Lectron adapter I used initially. I think Kevinhanff is right about that. The adapter can get really hot, especially in summer sun. I’ve had better luck with the A2Z adapter with less days where it overheats.

Thanks Much! Yes I have the Lectron Adapter and it indeed gets rather hot. Might be time to swap out to the Rivian Wall Charger…??‍♂

There are threads about this well over a year old and it is normal behavior when ambient temps are over about 85. Has nothing to do with the brand of the EVSE. I just limit my R1S to charging at 40A during the summer.

Thanks!…So, are you saying that I would experience the same thing with a Rivian Wall Charger?

I'm having the same issue with my Rivian Wall Charger. I don't remember it happening last summer, I was thinking that maybe my connections are getting loose.

Yeah this is happening to all chargers. I’ve found if I ramp my amps down to 32 it holds it at 7.3kw and never derates it down to 5.9kw and that is during the heat of the day in South Florida.

I have a Tesla wall connector with a TeslaTap Mini 60 adapter and also experience fluctuations from 11.5kW to 10.2kW often. I was told this could be due to a few possible factors such as, voltage variations, charger settings, circuit load management: If there are other appliances or electrical loads on the same circuit or nearby circuits, the charger might reduce its output to prevent overloading, vehicle charging: Rivian manages the power it draws, it might not always pull the full 11.5kW, especially if the battery is nearly full or as others mentioned, environmental factors such as high temperatures. I was told that 10.2kW is within spec. I’m not sure if 5.5kW is acceptable. I’m sure there are others here who can offer more insight.

I shut the breaker to the Tesla charger (forcing a restart), and then ran the Tesla One app to reconnect and verify the charging amps. Has not been a problem since.

Well that sucks, I bought a Tesla universal wall connector for this exact issue.

No such issues with my Emporia charger which is outside in direct sunlight (as is the R1T) during a blazing hot July this year. I charge during the day BTW.

I have the Rivian wall charger and as long as I don’t have climate control on or my audio system it stays between 11 and 11.3kw which delivers about 24/25miles per hour.

I have not had any slowdown even after charging for longer periods of time. I’ve charged in cold, moderate and hot 90+ degree weather.

I’m hardwired to a 60a dedicated breaker.
