Received my A2Z Tyhoon Pro the other day and went to test it out yesterday. Plugged it in to the truck connected the CCS cable and within 20 seconds it was charging. I was at 14%SOC and it quickly ramped up to 204kwh. I proceeded to start playing with the new haloween costumes among other things and noticed after about 30 minutes of charging I was down to 65kwh. This was at around 75% SOC. No limited charging messages, no heat at the handle or the adaptor. Anyone else experience such slow speeds with no notice/messages?

65 kW is about the maximum charge rate that I would expect at 75% SOC with a very warm battery.

I would expect that the battery would be very warm after charging from 14% to 75%.

Therefore, it sounds to me as if all components of @boosted20v's charging system (charger, adapter, and vehicle) are probably working OK.

What do others think?

Normal charging curve behavior. The fuller the pack gets the more electrical resistance there is. Charging derates to help manage heat produced by resistance. This will happen at any charger. Any network. You will never see a flat curve from start to finish.

Thanks for the replies, I definitely expected derating, just didn't expect that much at less than 80% SOC. Granted this was not only my first time using a Tesla charger this was only my second time level 3 charging period. I should have checked the dashboards in service mode to see what my temps and voltage were at.

It will derate that much the last 20~10% of your set limit. Not just to 100%.

While fast charging on roadtrips, I almost always disconnect at something in the 50-60% charge level. Just enough to get to the next charging station with a little reserve. These charging sessions are FAST - something like 15-20 minutes. Even charging to 50%, the charging rate has already started slowing and that’s just the nature of charging Lithium batteries.

The https://www.abetterrouteplanner.com web site gives some good ideas of expected charging times on road trips.

This^. After 80% it only goes downhill. 54kw is what I see after 80%.

it drops off a lot after 60%, again at 70%, and gets painfully slow above 80%.

Search for dcfc charging curve.

At 60/70/80 are 3 points when speeds take a material dive

Very normal. The only Rivian with a sweet charging curve is the rare Large+ battery packs (undercover Max pack)

The key here is to only charge to what you need to get to the next location. If that is 85%, fine. If you can get there with 65%, that is even better (and quicker).

This is exactly opposite the ICE behavior we have been trained on forever. When was the last time anyone got less than a fill-up at a gas station?

I rarely go past 80% SOC at a DCFC because the next DCFC location has always been within 250 miles. YMMV, and I am sure there are locations where you need all the SOC you can get.

Be sure to use the Rivian’s navigation system, *importantly including charging stops.* When it “knows” you’re going to charge you’ll typically see a message that it is “preparing battery for fast charging.” A prepared battery charges much faster than an unprepared battery. Others may tell you what it takes for a battery to be prepared or unprepared, but I don’t really care. I just let the car do whatever it ”thinks” is needed to prepare the battery and then I find that I’ll get a pretty decent charging curve, including still charging at about 100mph at 90% SoC when absolutely necessary (such as in the charging deserts of Nevada, New Mexico and the Texas panhandle that we’ve recently been roadtripping through).

Incidentally, I think this is the best argument in favor of Rivian’s navigation vs CarPlay or similar. CarPlay doesn’t know about your battery’s state of charge, let alone how to prepare it properly for a fast charge. I am very comfortable with using CarPlay in other vehicles and it took a while to adjust, but now I find Rivian’s navigation system to be quite acceptable. Some things just take a while to get used to.

Great info for when I do take my first road trip. Less is more I see. This session was really to just test out the adapter. Thanks again for all of the great responses. Good group on here
