The Gen 1 dual motors are made by Bosch, I believe, and the Gen 2s were made in-house. Could there be design efficiencies that result in the same power output? Or does equal power = equally inefficient, regardless of design? Additionally, they also removed a lot of electrical wiring (a mile and a half, I think has been reported) so presumably there is a weight savings-based efficiency gain there as well. I don't know the details of any other changes between Gen 1 & 2 that could result in gains.
The G1 dual motor version are all using the in-house motors. Only the original quads use the Bosch motors.

I have to agree, especially in places like SoCal where lots of highway and higher mph streets. I found in places like New England with lots of back roads with speed limits between 40 and 50 I could get 2.6-2.8 in my G1 R1S pretty consistently.

I did a 7400 mile trip a couple of months ago pretty much doing the speed limit and got 2.32 mi/kWh on my G1 R1S using conserve on most of the highway stretches.

I did a similar 6500 mile trip in a rear wheel drive R1S and got 3.2 miles/kWh, I just can’t see an R1S or R1T being that close to the Model S. I think real world 2.75 would be attainable though in a dual motor with the efficiency changes they have made.

My Gen1 dual, much of that highway. New Hampshire here btw

Is that a lot of short trips like under 45 minutes? I’m usually between 1.9 -2.05 if I am not on a trip.

On my trips the first hour was always lower average as the battery warmed up. Especially in the Tesla as it was a winter trip in colder weather.

why is capacity a big deal? imo, what's more important is efficiency (lets exclude battery chemistry for now and assume were comparing batteries of the same chemistry just different size).

i dont really care if my battery is 100kWh or 90kWh if the latter gives me more range. if anything vehicles like the Hummer EV, GMC/Sliverado EV are dumb because they have behemoth batteries to get the range they are advertising. EVs are supposed to help us move to more sustainable energy and reduced carbon emissions. throwing in a 200+kWh battery doesn't line up well with that. we need batteries to get more advanced, smaller and vehicles to get more efficient not keep upping the battery size.

which is what Rivian appears to have done. they are keeping similar range or improving range while reducing battery size. good for environment, good for their costs/profits. no loss for customer afaik.

A little bit of short around town drives, running errands, kid drop off etc ... My last " road-trip" to six flags New England this weekend looked like this, weather was unseasonably warm, and cool on the return.

No the Gen1 dual motors are the same Enduro Rivian motors currently used in Gen2. Bosch only made the Gen1 quad motors. Rivian kept on saying "all new motors" w the Gen2 launch, but to my knowledge its the same Enduro in house motor the Gen1 dual motors always had.

I think you are generally right, but there are still two reasons to talk about it.

One is that is adds information into the discussion about advertised and real world efficiencies. People are giving their information about efficiency in mi/kWh, so if you know your usable battery size, you have a more accurate idea of your 100-0 range. It also gives you a better idea about real world range for the various other sized batteries based on your efficiency.

Second is that EVs have the advantage of other uses besides driving. It doesn't matter how efficient your car is at driving when you are trying to power your house or worksite or campground.

Yes. It's the same enduro motor. The gen 2 tri and quad use adapted versions of the enduro

Is the new Gen 2 Large battery LFP like the standard?
Only the standard is LFP

2023 Quad motor R1S, in Oregon. 33" Soft offroad Micky Thompson Baja tires installed at 14K miles. Here in Pacific Northwest your either going uphill or down hill. Most my driving is over the coast range and back.

So I recently added a Gen2 R1S to the stable, how can I tell if it’s this mythical Large+? I have never seen Rivian say this is a thing and it’s just kind of casually mentioned on this forum.

Sooo….long story short…how do you know if you have a Large+ if its not something Rivian advertised or its not badged as such?

Towing. Efficiency goes out the window and all that's left is capacity.
