Back in January I posted a thread that Rivian should change their front headlights. I thought it could attract more buyers. I received an incredible amount of backlash for such a suggestion. Low and behold the Scout. Totally different front end and it looks fantastic. Great job Rivian!
I know this is a troll, but you do know that the VW/Rivian agreement doesn't include anything on actual physical vehicle design/platform, right? (Plus the Scout relaunch started *WELL* before the Rivian partnership.)

At announcement, the JV appears to be focused on electrical architecture only. It would follow that VW is leveraging same pre-JV for Scout. Scout's announcement referenced zonal architecture, which is how Rivian messages their electrical architecture.

Certainly has nothing to do with headlight design.

Per the PR:
  • Rivian and Volkswagen Group intend to enter a joint venture to create next generation software-defined vehicle (SDV) platforms to be used in both companies’ future electric vehicles
  • Volkswagen Group to invest an initial $1 billion in Rivian, with up to $4 billion in planned additional investment for a total expected deal size of $5 billion
  • Joint venture is expected to build on Rivian’s industry-leading software and electrical architecture to create best-in-class software-defined vehicle technology platform

You're still wrong to suggest the change and wrong that Rivian fixed the headlights on a someone else's vehicle at your suggestion. Keep it up.

Agreed. Rivian’s look like Minions. Compared to other trucks they look like they are in need of gender affirming care.

Are you so fragile that you‘re personally lessened by driving a vehicle which doesn’t project anger to everyone around you?

I'm also not a fan of the headlight design - agree the Scout looks better from the front.

Still think the R1s looks great overall, but would look even better with a sleeker front light design

I do like the design of the Scout prototypes but I also like the Rivian design. While I do have a preference for the Scout's look from the front, the Rivian approach is definitely more unique and is a branding symbol. I actually really like the Rivian headlights - when I first saw them in person I found them to be beautifully designed objects in themselves. The Gen 2 version is a downgrade in my opinion as it has lost the distinctive radial pattern around the edge. I think the polarizing aspect of the design is the overall composition of front fascia. If the headlights themselves were closer to the corners /fenders (more conventional) I think there would not be naysayers. For me, it was the overall vehicle design & performance that made me a buyer, not one particular design element.

The Scout looks cool, but after reading the announcement, it’s underwhelming.

Hope to start production 3 years from now.
Body on frame and solid rear axle will ride like hell on road.
No air suspension.
No 3rd row in the SUV.
No stated efficiency rating - on 35” off-road tires it’s gonna suck

It’s gonna take more than nice headlights to get me out of a Rivian and into something else.

So good job Rivian on keeping the headlights? Is there a rear headlight?

I guess that I disagree with several of the tenets offered in this thread. I happen to like the vertical headlight arrangement of the the Rivian. it is the most noticeable feature that makes a Rivian stand out in the crowd. Those who don't like it can just buy a truck that looks like everything else on the road. The Rivian is a cutting edge truck and needs to look like one.

Our sweet Opal (our R1T) may be a little "Minion looking", but that's just fine as she can eat Corvettes for lunch. As far as her needing gender affirming care, I don't think so. Opal looks just like she is supposed to, sweet and nice until she kicks your ass.

One of Opal's stable mates is Vivian. She is a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Duramax. Vivian is big and mean looking and often scares small children. If anything, Vivian could stand a little softening in the looks department. What's interesting is that Opal has almost the same torque as Vivian and twice the horsepower. I have included a picture of the girls resting on the driveway to show the difference.

Opal is the modern version of what we used to call a "sleeper", like a stripped down 1963 Dodge two door sedan with black wall tires and hub caps powered by a dual quad 413.

I think that if you really want a truck that looks like all the others and doesn't perform as well as a Rivian, you can wait for three years and buy a Scout.
