Gear Shop - $125 for a Sun Shade!?

Over the weekend we got a firm delivery for our new R1S (Yaay) so perusing the gear shop for some potential accessories noticed the price of this. Does anyone own this and I'm guessing you stripped the platinum foil off after receiving and sold it for thousands of dollars. What could possibly warrant a 500% markup over marketplace......or is it that logo?

The same could be said for the R1S cargo cover. $250? lol Thats about $175 from other manufacturers. You can get a "tolerable" knockoff for $90.

Aren’t most OEM branded accessories overpriced? GM‘s Mopar stuff is out of control, Toyota sells overpriced TRD stuff, and Tesla sells a $900 bottle of tequila. It’s splitting hairs to say this overpriced thing from manufacturer A is a worse deal than this overpriced thing from manufacturer B.

With Rivian there are a couple accessories that people buy because we don’t have any or many alternatives, like the crossbars. ?‍

I bought it and I'm embarassed that I did given the cost. I'm also embarassed to admit that I didn't realize to hold the heavy thing up, you had to use the visors In the past I had flimsy ones that I could cram into the windshield nooks and it held fine. It is well made but worth $125? I don't think so.

if price is the deciding factor or you just want something different - then you might want to investigate the offerings from some of our fine site supporters that market/sell after-market products for Rivians

The accessories may seem overpriced from the perspective that there are cheaper alternatives, however the company is still losing money overall. If Rivian charged less for those accessories (or just stopped selling them) then they would have to charge even more for the vehicle to retain the same level of unprofitability.

And you know what - blue paint doesn't cost thousands more to make than silver paint. But if Rivian didn't charge so much for certain colors they would have to increase the base price. And the stupid connect+ subscriptions. On a car this expensive there shouldn't be any need to hit us up for another $10/month. But it lets them advertise the car for slightly less which appears to work on some people.

I'm not defending the practice, I would greatly prefer a more transparent pricing model. But it seems that a lot of people are not able to look at the big picture when making purchases and these tricks are effective enough that it is hard to compete without doing it.

How is it different from any other manufacturer? The sunshades on my wife’s Volvo XC60 was $230 from the dealer and even a plastic clip to hold sunglasses was $65.

The $45 center console dual level organizer is a great deal. It is currently the most functional / best designed option and about the same price as cheaper aftermarket options.

I first bought the TWraps version for $34 and recently replaced it with the Rivian option for $48. The TWraps is extremely cheap in comparison in both quality and design. For only $14 more, you get a significantly better product.

I don’t know when you got ours, but judging by the price - a long time ago as the price has been $25 for quite a while. I’ve made enormous improvements in both quality and design since. We now make them with carbon fiber infused abs. Here is completely unedited photo, leather inserts not in yet.
Not saying anything against Rivian’s, just saying that the quality now is not like the quality a year ago.
