Hoping to get an R2 in 2026 to replace my Model X which I use to tow a Safari Condo Alto F1743 (about 2200 lbs fully loaded, full kitchen and bathroom, queen size bed, 2 person dinette, added 735W solar on roof, 600AH LiFePO batteries). It will be interesting to compare energy usage numbers. With the X can tow about 130 miles at 60mph on a level dry road with no headwinds before needing to charge.

We wanted to get one of those Altos when first shopping for a trailer, but the wait-list was soooo long, and there are no dealers within 1k miles of where we live that carried them.

I've thought about buying a futura trailer and taking a car to the track. Buttonwillow is about 120 miles from my house so maybe I can make it there if I charge to 100% (270 mile range).

Beautiful! This is what I'm trying to get my smarter half to let me buy.

What speed did you get 1.4MPK? And was that with the Pirelli AT tires?
300 miles with a mixture of the Pirellis, Nokian Snows and the Toyo ATs. Mostly 1 and 2 lane state roads so probably average of about 60 mph.

It's a great little camper the only drawback being the small bed where one person needs to climb over the other to get in and out. We'd like to move up to a 22' but will probably wait until some of the EV campers are out, will most likely go with the eStream unless Pebble comes out with a smaller version and they're reliable. Airstream went through a bad stretch of workmanship a while ago but I trust their quality now and like that they've got service centers around the country. We were looking into an Alto Safari, which would also be a great option for the Rivian to tow, haven't heard if they're looking into any EV options.

Thanks. It was a total gut job. Managed to save the original stove and fridge though as we wanted to keep the charm of the era. Completely reoutfitted the interior with modern insulation, cabin heater, 12v system, etc. Used all stainless and marine hardware and fittings.

I'm pulling an Airstream Basecamp 20X.

R1T and Basecamp.jpg

I tried out a Sol Horizon too, but ultimately decided I liked the Basecamp better, mostly for the larger sleeping area (the shape is a bit odd but the total area is very close to a king bed).

At 55mph I see 1.5 or even 1.6 mi/kWh, at 65 it drops to 1.3 mi/kWh or so.

Having a trailer makes charging stops so much nicer, since you can just flop in the trailer for 45 mins or so, have a snack, and get back on the road.
I owned the original BC, bought it used at a good price during the great recession. Every gas stop or campground someone would want to look at it, it was really unusual at the time. Fit my lifestyle as I was divorced at the time, camping, star parties, etc. Sold it 10 years later before the BC2 came out when they started getting in high demand and made a nice bit of money to help with the '16 Bambi. They really didn't know what their market was with the original and they priced it way too high, these second gens are better done, very nice. Would be cool if they did an EV refresh!

2013 '16 Airstream "Bambi". Getting an average of 1.4 mi/kWh over 300 miles, mostly back and forth to the Colorado mountains from Denver. Tows like a dream, hardly even notice it's there.

I've been curious as to what Travel Trailers/RVs members of this community are towing with their R1Ts/R1Ss (and in the future, maybe R2s and R3s!?) - If you have some shots, share them! Give us some info about your set-up, the good and the bad, and whatever other thoughts you might have...

I'll start off:

Wife and I tow an inTech Sol Dawn. It's a 16' with some funky design choices that we really love - tall enough for me to stand up in (I'm 6'3"), decently light for what is packed in there, and is easy to maintain (winterizing takes about 15 minutes, and that includes draining the water heater).

One thing that would be nice is slightly bigger sleeping space - I'm quite tall and my wife is too, and no matter how we arrange ourselves, the sleeping space is just a bit too small. We've thought about bumping up to a bigger rig in the series (the Sol Dusk), but the cost right now is just a bit much. But if our current trailer met with an accident...... hehehe.

Happy to help!

We seem to average 1.3-1.4 mi/kWh, but have seen up to 1.6 as well.

I've logged the three trips we took last year in this thread.

We're towing a vestibule travel trailer made in Minnesota. Last year we circumnavigated the Great Lakes traveled over 5000 miles and averaged 1.95 mi/kWh.

Aliner Expedition with the fixed queen bed. We’ve had the Aliner about two years (and the R1T Launch Edition almost 3 years) and done about a dozen trips, mostly 3-5 day trips in NC, SC, and VA. Rivian has chargers on the Blue Ridge Parkway which is empowering (especially when they used to be free!). Efficiency is 1.3 to 1.6 depending on temperature, speed, and elevation gain/loss. I try to charge every 150 miles or so. Longest stretches have been about 175 to 180 with downhill miles helping. Never below 15-20%. Tesla chargers help a lot in trip planning. We also often try to hopscotch NC state parks which have 30/50 amp hookups, 30 to the camper and 50 for the Rivian portable charger. I have a very heavy duty NEMA 14-50 15 foot extension cord, which is often needed to reach the charge post. But it’s hard to beat a full charge when you leave the campground!

Yes, Equal-i-zer. It's a touch high in front, need to adjust it a bit. Tows great.
Great to know. My Land Rover had an electronic stabilzation system that discouraged Stabilizer hitches (it did every thing, and was a super cool system). I wasn't sure if the Rivian had the same ability. I have yet to tow, but when my R1S is out of the shop for the 4th time since I bought it in December I plan on doing a trial tow.

The Rivian towing specs specifically say you need to have a weight distribution/stabilizer to achieve those numbers.

Yes, when I ordered my Alto in 2016 the waitlist was well over a year. I think now it is much shorter.

Safari Condo still does not have any dealers in the US as far as I know. I drove from California to Abbotsford B.C. to take delivery in 2018. Ironically, I now live in Vancouver just 60km from where I took delivery.

They are great trailers but the price has now almost doubled since I bought mine.

They have a distributor in Durango, Colorado, Four Corners RV. When we were looking they said they had some coming in in about 6 months but if we wanted to customize it was about a year.
