They cannot make up dates with no confidence as a public company by law.

You can always say they all lie or make things up but it speaks to the integrity of the company. If that's the case, do you want to buy their products?
Unless R.J. is omniscient, the only thing he/Rivian can do is make up dates especially for those with windows two years down the road. Instead of getting offended think if you were working for Rivian trying to give out a window in Nov-Dec 2023 how many variables you had to work with to get it right and how confident you could be. I am not accusing anyone of lying. All I am saying is that it could only be a guess at best. Chill.

That would be a bad idea, likely illegal and really piss people off.

I'll take it whenever it's ready. I just need them to give me a couple weeks notice so I know I'm not traveling when they are delivering it.
Actually I am perfectly OK with it. I would rather to have their best guess than my speculation. I am sure window get more accurate as you get closer to it.

They need to make up a date even if they have no confidence in it. Ford is suppose to open up the order books in January. That means folks putting deposit down for an estimated delivery date. I assume there is some overlap of reservation holders. I know I am one and having a date with Rivian will help in sticking around specially if it is not too far down the road.
I’m in the same boat with both Lightning and Rivian reservations. Frustrated at Fords lack of comms on official range and cost. Frustrated with both on potential build dates.

Rivian is more than I was initially planning to pay and is more vehicle than I need but Ford salesmen are doing a great job selling Rivian products to me. At this point it is basically Rivian timing vs how much B.S. I can take from Ford dealers. It looks like picking an Explore package may not be great help with timing either. If both of them have significant delays, Cybertruck and Silverado may even come to play. What happened to the good old days that you liked a car and next day you were driving it?

Covid hysteria happened.
Being a first adopter is always gonna be a less enjoyable experience than mainstream sales.

I love the typical Rivian vaguery of "days away."

Rivian’s delivery date estimates will of course be best guess subject to change without notice. I don’t think they will just make up dates.

I would be interested in seeing the daily production numbers to-date. It would be instructive to know what their best output in a day was. I am sure the worst is zero. The median would also be enlightening as well as a daily output
timeline.

For what it's worth, the guide on my test drive today said he didn't think there was any way they would be giving out delivery dates before the end of the year. Most of the people doing the first mile drives were hired to do deliveries but there are no trucks to deliver so they are doing the in person test drives instead.

They can't make money if they don't deliver no matter how many vehicles they build. There has been a lot of talk about potential customer pickup in Normal. If truck/driver availability continues to be a problem, could this be at least part of the solution?

No I think you misunderstood. They don’t have any R1T trucks to deliver Because they aren’t building very many right now. They have a bunch of people hired to deliver to customers and no product to deliver.

I did indeed misunderstand. I suppose my mind went that direction because they recently reported they built a couple more hundred trucks than they delivered. Hmmm......

I think many of us, or even all of us, will get delivery estimates. But I think they're going to be some pretty vague guesstimates. Like I'm expecting my max pack R1T I reserved and configured earlier this year to probably get an estimate of "4th quarter 2023."

And that's actually just fine if Rivian feels confident in their production ramp and timing to hit such targets. but I don't know if I'd be making such promises. Even if the production ramp goes better than anticipated over the coming months, they still have no control over their supply chain and other logistical issues that are a problem right now.

That doesn't really line up with the numbers that were presented on the earnings call. If I remember there was a significant disparity between number of vehicles built compared with numbers delivered.
