2023 R1T Vin 1896X January 29'th build date I was told yesterday mine wasn't compatible. I asked if they could escalate and find out why etc.

If indeed it is a wiring harness issue, that would go in the face of what was previously communicated ages ago about the only way to get a PTC retrofitted was to get a manual tonneau cover with the rails as that was the limiting factor.

It would seem odd to eliminate that one wire run from an entire harness on some vehicles rather than just include it like how every OEM does. Same harness regardless of the optioned accessories. just plug and play and charge the customer.
IIRC one had to order the factory $800 MTC to be able to upgrade to the PTC in the future

Exactly. I had the PTC removed from my configuration and was told my only option was to get the manual tonneau cover, and that would include the components to have a PTC added later once reintroduced. So paid the 1100 cdn for the manual tonneau as part of my config and have been pressing since to get a PTC retrofit.

The manual does the job, don't get me wrong, but pulling and storing or setting aside panels constantly is a pain. I suppose the PTC was always one of those OMG things that really sold me on truck life.

Finally! Note, the support tab says it only has a 2 year warranty on the retrofit.

While $3300 is spendy, the fact that it includes install means it's probably in-line with the original $2000 price I seem to recall from my preorder. I was one of those affected by the original PTC stop-sale and it was removed from my config before my Feb 2023 build date. I wound up having to wait around 9 months before I finally got my manual tonneau. It's been okay, but I definitely think twice before bagging it and throwing it in the gear tunnel to put something larger in the bed. Need to decide how badly I want the retrofit, but I'm seriously considering it, especially since it's the new roll-up version.

Edit: Apparently it was $1500 originally, so not exactly a deal, but still tempting.

Edit 2: Reached out to Rivian...my truck is also not able to get the retrofit and I'm not happy. Feb 2023 build with a 199xx VIN.

Edit 3: A member of the service team at Rivian called me after the chat session and explained that there was a range of vehicles that were built without the wiring necessary to support a PTC. Kind of surprising, honestly, but if that's the case it's unlikely the ones showing as incompatible will ever get it. Part of me wonders if this is related to some of the other running harness changes like various 12V outlets being present or not.

Doesn't seem like any early trucks are compatible. Maybe they added the wires in 2023 and later? And it wasn't included in the original builds.
I think there are two issues involved...

When they removed PTC from configs (mine included)—and steered people towards manual—they said the truck would still have rails and be eligible for future retrofit. What wasn't said out loud was that they'd continue production with existing wiring harness (even if you chose manual at +$800 or none). But at some point no tonneau configs would have physically different bed panels/tracks.

Then, at some point, production changed to remove wiring harness for builds that do not require it. My guess, this happened either as they ran out of the old/existing wiring harness. Or, when they changed the entire production to gen 2.

IIRC, the move to remove PTC from configs was during '22. Production pause and switch from gen 1 to 2 was mid '24.

Preorder pricing was shockingly only $1500

I don't think this is right. I'm a 2023 R1T, vin 26XXX, and mine is compatible. So later than others here saying they aren't. I also was forced off the auto tonneau and I did NOT change to manual so that theory doesn't work either? That said I got my truck from the shop when one popped that matched my build, so maybe those trucks came ready or something I dunno.

I'm going to wait and see if the SC gets back to me after our conversation on this from yesterday. I'm not in a rush to spend 4k cdn, but I would like to get this sorted by years end. We'll see how this progresses once the billion phone calls to the SC die down.

Mine is eligible 2180X in Canada, but the guy couldn’t give me a price (typical). I expect they will rip us Canucks off even worse.
I might hate you. Sorry.

Well that's wild. I just checked and they're saying no to my truck with a 199xx VIN.

There's another thread where somebody posted the official install instructions from the service manual or whatever and it had a note about needing to use a cut off wheel to remove what looks like a steel peg from the truck body in the bed to make room for the cover, and that was for "vehicles built before may 22, 2023"

That isn't harness related but wonder if there is a connection to the timeframe for compatibility.

It does. They mention cutting a panel in the back of the bed in models produced prior to May 2023.
They can do it. Do part of #1, then do #2. They just need to change the channels to the appropriate one.

I have 0153XX and told my vehicle isn't compatible. I have the tracks and currently have the manual tonneau cover. When I asked customer service why it wasn't compatible, he said the install was for only people who currently have automatic tonneau cover or configured with their purchase. Odd because they wouldn't be purchasing another one.
